Is there any chance the UMC-1 will get anamorphic vertical stretch down the road? Looks like the scaler has everything necessary to accommodate it. Once mine arrives, I'll still need to leave the DVDO Edge in the chain to do this and I'd really love to remove it. Thanks!

I also hoped that the anamorphic mode would be enabled. Unfortunately it is not enabled. I have my edge on the Umc-1 output. It can take a lot of flashing to go from directive to blue ray. Hope that the new edge release helps.
The edge allows the source to negotiate with the display. Maybe someday emo will do the same in passthrough mode.
Neither video processor is bad. I have found that the flexibility of the VP is worth leaving it in the system

What firmware is on the Edge now?

What firmware is on the Edge now? Wouldn't that also alleviate the problem of the UMC not being able to output 480i? Is the deinterlacer in the EDGE better than the UMC?

The edge will remove the interlacing from 480I to 480P on the input signal. Then, it will scale to the setting that you have selected.
Placing the edge first would achieve most of what I want ie., lip sync and on-screen display. It would however, force me to use yet another remote control.
Watched 2012 last night - switched the umc to the blu-ray and had the projector on - then, I inserted the disc into the player - That method let me get video with almost no flashing.
Regarding updates for the edge - all that I can say is that periodic updates are GOOD! I can only hope that EMO will continue to release improvements in the firmware so that we can get new features that we haven't even dreamt about yet.

Excuse my ignorance, but what the heck are you talking about? Please translate for us rubes. Sorry dude, it's projector lingo. Most (if not all) projectors display a 16:9 image just like regular TVs. When you watch movies that were filmed in 2.35:1 (also called cinemascope), you'll see black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. This "aspect ratio" annoys some people but is how the director intended the movie to be seen. When you buy a projector, you have to decide what aspect ratio screen to buy. Some people buy 16:9 sized screens (like regular TVs), some buy 2.40 or 2.35:1. These numbers really just mean 2.35 inches wide for every inch tall. A 2.35:1 screen is roughly the same aspect ratio as a dollar bill. ;D Wow, I'm nerdy. Okay, so on to anamorphic stretch. If you decide on 16x9, you will still see black bars. This may be fine if you watch a lot of regular TV or movies filmed in 1.85:1 or play video games. If you decide on 2.35:1, then you can remove the black bars by using a scaler to stretch the image "tall". People will now look unusually skinny. My HTPC also stretches the image using software instead of a scaler. After the image is stretched, you need to slide another lens in front of the projector's lens to widen the image by 33%. This brings everything back to normal and gives you a huge cinemascope movie experience. This lens you use is called an "anamorphic lens". There are other ways to fix the image that does not require a lens, but that is a whole different story. whew...deep breath. Well, that's as easy as I can explain it. Sorry for those who read through scratching their heads. I can be confusing. -TK

I have my fingers crossed. I am trying out a new 2.35:1 screen using the zoom method giving me light overspill and it looks promising so far. Having the UMC-1 handle the vertical stretch when I decide to add an anamorphic lens would save me several hundred dollars and extra complexity.
It is impressive that Oppo would be forward thinking enough to add this feature to their blu-ray players. I hope Emotiva will see the benefit this feature brings to the table and will enable it in the UMC-1.

tk thanks for that info. pretty much sums it up. You're welcome. I think if Emo can get this added, it will be a nice benefit for many of the home theater enthusiasts they seem to be targeting, especially since 1080p projectors are becoming cheaper every day.
