I just got my new Home Theater Magazine and see a review of the Cary 11a Processor and Model 7.125 Amp.
I know that the Cary and the UMC-1 use the same processor. Are there any other similarities? Can I assume that the favorable reviews of the Cary are pretty much the same review as a UMC-1?
Is the 7.125 Amp a Emotiva clone with a different face plate?

Funny I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure we will never get a definitive answer, but if someone has one and wants to open it up we may get a better idea.

I don't see any similarities to the UMC.. and for those wondering the Cary unit is on sale for the bargain price of $3500....so say the reviews..

Guys, this really isn't a apples to apples, or even apples to oranges. The Cary is an audio-only processor. It would not surprise me in the least if it was based on the UMC-1's audio capabilities, but that is information we're likely never to find out. It does not upscale or do any video processing. It has HD Radio and Balanced Outputs as its only differentiators from a UMC-1. I'm sure it sounds great, but I'm sure if you wrote "Cary Audio" on the front of the UMC-1 and sent it to the same reviewer, it would sound great, too - and look even better.

Sure makes a guy wonder to himself... I get all this horsepower, in the UMC, and for so little money... yeah, there's head aches but it seems as though EVERYTHING out there with a similar spec sheet cost at least 4 times as much... pinch me.
mmm, this is Good Kool-aid...

... yeah, there's head aches ... and, the head aches here are NOTHING compared to the headaches the 11a has had - including hardware replacements to fix bugs, huge stability issues, refunds etc. etc.. And, that's in a box costing $3500!

And, that's in a box costing $3500! I think the Cirrus engine had a lot of problems, and problems roll downhill. Parasound and Outlaw were probably trying to work it out and finally threw it out the window. Cary tried to ship before everyone and found out what a disaster that could be. Emotiva stuck with the chip, waited, waited, waited, and probably shipped like the 3rd or 4th "released" silicon from Cirrus, which was at least stable enough to be firmware-fixable. I think Emotiva has done everything they can to "do us right" at this point. That doesn't make the UMC-1 perfect, but it makes the very best of their business strategy, and as mentioned, gives us an incredible price/performer. Untouchable in today's market.

To get the Cary pre/pro that most closely approximates the UMC-1 you need to get both the 11A and the 11V. Together you are looking at about $8000 to get the same performance the UMC-1 provides. Those two pieces, together, give you nearly identical chip set engines for audio and video. The only advantage that Cary has going for it is the balanced outputs.
The third company to have released a prepro with the same chip sets is Krell and they are asking $40,000 for their version. Krell as added a few more bells and whistles than Cary or Emotiva but all three are based on the same chips. Anyone think the Krell is worth 60 times the UMC-1? ;D ...or the Cary worth 12 times as much? ;D

roadrunner, I think the Krell is clearly worth about 56, maybe 57 times the UMC-1, but not 60. That's just ridiculous.

I think 57.5x is my limit. (Why do I feel like saying, "baby, 15 schnitzengruben is my limit...do you think I'm from Havana?") Mark
