Is there anyone who is happy with the latest PL IIx implementation? If so, are your rears/surrounds just as loud as the fronts? I've had other receivers in the past capable of IIx and they've never sounded like this. Something must be off/broken, right?

PLIIx sounds messed up here, too. I am also having more trouble with dropouts when switching out of PLIIx - seems like I have to cycle through a few modes to get the sound back. Unfortunately it only happens sporadically.

Just noticed that PLIIx over PCM 2channel sounds fine. The problem might be limited to some sources such as DD5.1.
Edit: never mind. it affects pcm 2.0 as well.

in the meantime, I'd like to try another mode. Is there a mode other than IIx that will utilize my rear two channels?

Well, I just had the volume blast again. It was coming back from a commercial and when the broadcast DD 2/0 signal reacquired, PLIIx engaged and blew me out of the room. I think the safest thing to do is go into the advanced audio settings and make sure PLIIx is NOT set for any codec. YMMV.

Have you guys that are having PLIIx issues made sure that PLIIx is set to movie and not music? I noticed that it defaults to Music which has louder rears and when I switched to Movie it then sounded correct.

No I haven't. I'll tell you, when it wants to act up and engages the volume is EXTREMELY high. I'm not taking any chances at the moment.
Addendum: Well I take that back for interest sake I went in and changed DD 2/0 to use PLIIx movie. Turned the volume waaaaaayyyy down and lo and behold the status button says PLIIx music. I went in an verified that it was actually set for PLIIx movie in the menu. I will also say that it did sound more normal, even pretty good.
Something's seriously screwed up with the PLIIx code.

I noticed mine did the same thing right when I set it but after I shutdown and turned it back on the Movie status sticks properly now. Who knows?

Playing with other modes. Dolby DDEX does the same thing for me. Surrounds/rears too loud.

They added the two additional "refinements" for Dolby PL - Dimension and Width (have no idea why they left the third common option - Panorama - out).
Could this have caused some corruption in the code for PLIIx?
C'mon guys - this is PLII, not any new stuff - been around for years - how can this not be nailed by now?

My understanding of PLIIx is that for DD5.1 sources it should matrix the side surrounds to the rears, not turn it into multi-channel stereo. This seems like an easy mistake that can be corrected quickly.

You know, I wonder if the people that are having the problems with PLIIX, DDEX have 5.1 systems? It's almost like both the rear and surrounds are being piped to the surrounds in such a situation. Like two speakers worth of sound from the rears.

From Lonnie's post: "The last things we have found so far has to do with Dolby PLIIx. In this iteration of the software we opened up the Center Width and Dimension to everyone (which previously was preset). The Center Width is there to allow you to spread out the Center channel and mix it into the surrounds if you are running a small center channel. By increasing the center width, this will give you a better blend with the other speakers in the system and make it appear as though the speaker is larger than it is. We inadvertently set the base coefficient to its maximum level rather than its minimum level. The result of this is the center channel level is reduced and the voices will appear from your surrounds. We are very sorry for this and will get this corrected ASAP."
That explains my issue. Hope it gets fixed very very soon.

Hopefully it won't take forever to get an update out for it.

Hi all, Just to bring closure to this thread...
Lonnie and I have advised on the "UMC-1 definitive update page" that we have found a problem in the PLIIx code and this is the reason for the weird behavior.
It is being addressed now. I sincerely apologize for this mistake on our part. Big Dan
