I think what Bills theory DOES prove though is that "in general" successfully updated units the first time, will be successfully updated units the second time. I'm wondering if the guys that are genuinely having problems, and from different computers and OS's are from a specific build date on their UMC's. I'm curious if there is something that could be tracked there as far as when they got the unit, what FW it came with ORIGINALLY and how much trouble they had updating to FW5 if they had something older when the first got the machine...
Bill, in general, a great attempt at tracking down the core issues. Very constructive. (we need more of that right now).

I got mine preinstalled with v5. But don't really know what the build date was. I think it should be further looked into.

I'm betting there will be hardware rev numbers on the boards internally, and I would also put money on Emotiva having records of what revisions were sent out for all serial number runs.
I will be looking forward to my V6 factory installed UMC-1 next week. Along with 5 others here in Singapore we will all be seeing how it works with our Cable sources and local variations of other gear.

not sure if there are any "void if opened" stickers on the cases of the unit but anyone willing to crack theirs open? I think, from the stock photos on the UMC page at emotiva that there are stickers on the boards that most likely have build information on them. if it doesn't void anything, post up the numbers, if they make sense, in that they all aren't the same from one owner to the next. We won't know if there is a pattern if only one or 2 guys post up. but I have to EMO is, in fact, tracking all this. Hopefully a pattern will emerge.

I have installed the firmware twice. Both times I had issues getting it to load properly.
The first time, the UMC hung up after loading the DSP. It just sat there on "Write 0%". After about 5 minutes of waiting, I turned off the power switch on the back, waited a few seconds and turned it back on. Then it started writing. With the other files, I got the "0 command response" error a few times, but I just kept clicking start until it worked. Finally got everything loaded, but had no sound at all.
The second time I loaded the firmware, I again got the "0 command response" error a few times, but again just kept clicking start until it worked. The second upload seemed to do the trick.

Based on some of the feedback here, I have a suggestion. I would really like to hear feedback on this, as well. If you have completed the v6 update successfully, but only once, could you perhaps run the update again? If you do, or have already, run it again, could you let us know if the first and/or second run was/were completed without incident? I'm wondering if a 2-pass update process will yield far more consistent results than a single pass. When I say "pass", I mean a completely successful update, at least on the surface. I/we have no way of knowing at this point whether or not an update is truly successful, bit-by-bit. Bill, I posted my results of re-flashing V6 a second time in the Safe-Mode + Networking thread. Thus far after two hours of rigorous testing I think It may have worked. Unfortunately I don't know whether it was the second successful re flashing or the running in Safe Mode that did the trick.

Based on what I've read here, it sounds like the Safe Mode aspect is probably vital. Now, whether or not the first flash was also beneficial, that isn't certain. I updated the Emonatics page instructing XP users to use Safe Mode for the update.
