for me at least.
I will add that I am a very happy and loyal Emotiva customer, but I have been very vocal about the issues that I have been having with the UMC-1. During the wait for the last 2 versions of the firmware, I made several e-mails and calls to Emotiva, (I even spoke to Lonnie himself a couple of times). I e-mailed back and forth with Lonnie a few times on issues I was having.
At first, the UMC-1 was almost unbearable, (audio drops with music and movies from my PS 3, audio drops with cable TV and all the weirdness with Emo-Q), but I stuck with it because I wanted it to be great. It also looks great sitting atop my XPA-5. ;D
The first firmware update was pretty painful. I think it took me 3 or 4 tries to get the firmware successfully loaded. But alas, the UMC-1 still didn't work right. But still I held out hope. So now V6 finally arrives and again, the upload process was pretty painful. I kept getting that lame "0 command response!" error. But I would just keep clicking start until it worked. The first time I loaded the firmware, I had no audio at all! I can't even tell you the amount of swear words I hurled at the UMC-1 and Emotiva in general. But I loaded the firmware again and everything seemed to work.
So the audio drop out issues with my PS 3 have gone away, but at first, I was still getting them with Dolby Digital audio from my AT&T U-Verse DVR. In fact, the audio dropouts with my cable box were worse than they had been. It used to just drop audio every once in a while. Post-firmware, it was dropping the audio almost every time I fast-forwarded or rewound. But I was actually happier because I watch movies or listen to music from my PS 3 almost every day. I only watch cable TV through my system every once in a while.
I am also happy to report that my cable audio drop out issues seem to have been solved. We have been having troubles connecting to the internet for the last couple of weeks, so AT&T came out and gave us a new gateway. It just occured to me the other day that I haven't noticed audio drop outs since. So us getting the new gateway from AT&T seems to have fixed the issue. Perhaps the new gateway has some new and improved firmware or something. Who knows?
I haven't bothered with Emo-Q since the initial firmware install. I simply manually set all my speaker distances and levels back to where they were.
My UMC-1 may still have bugs, but if so, they are in areas that I do not make use of, so I guess they don't really concern me. So in my case, I can FINALLY agree with Lonnie and Dan and say that my UMC-1 "just works".
Thanks to Dan, Lonnie and everyone at Emotiva. The UMC road has been extremely rocky, and even though I think Emotiva could have been a little more transparent with us in regards to reasons for delays and missed deadlines, in the end I feel that they have done right by me. My UMC-1 works and I think that it is a great product.
