I'm looking at upgrading a PS3 to go for Oppo, either the BDP80 or 83.
Can anyone advise if the processor in the UMC is going to better than the one in the BDP80. I am thinking its probably no better than the 83 but I'm open to feedback.
Note mostly playing blurays but also DVD (using Oppo 983 for dvd) and have full 7.1 setup - see sig.
Also my system using 100" screen with Panasonic AE2000 PJ

I have the UMC-1 and the Oppo BD83 in my system. I have read others describe the processing as being similar with perhaps a slight edge going to the Oppo. I love the way the Oppo makes Blu Ray look so I continue to use "passthrough" with the UMC-1 just as I did with my Onkyo 705 receiver. However, I'm currently seeing an issue with the way the UMC-1 handles video from the Oppo. I'm sending 4:2:2 colorspace from the Oppo and the UMC-1 is converting that to 4:4:4 colorspace for some reason. I have reported this issue to Emotiva and listed it in the tracker as well but have yet to get a satisfactory response for why it is happening. I am only able to confirm this because I have a DVDO VP50 scaler which displays input and output information for me. Hopefully Emotiva can fix this in a firmware update.

The Oppo BDP-83 has the ABT2010 video processor chip, a very good one and well implemented in the Oppo, I'd use it.
The Oppo BDP-80 has a different & inferior VP (Mediatek chip); just check which one seems to perform better according to your eyes; the one in the Oppo BDP-80 or the one in the UMC-1 (Genesis/Faroudja DCDi VP; Cortez II, Cinema, some like that).

I'd continue to use the 983 for DVD's (same chip as the 83) and buy the Oppo 80 for Blu-Rays to save a little money.

I want to salvage the 983 for my other stereo setup for SACD and CD audio into a USP-1 and UPA-2 and occasional DVD use to a small screen in my computer room. I need the extra HDMI for a DVR now as my other cable service has no recording option. The PS3 stays for games duty. So I am needing the 80/83 for CD/DVD and BR + SACD from time to time... wish it could do network media player duty too

I'm looking forward to that in a Blu-Ray player, as the DLNA support in my DirecTV DVR is atrocious. - LoopinFool

Sorry to continue the off-topic topic... I'm positive it's converting to 4:4:4 in order to do the video overlay for status (like volume, etc.). I'm curious why you consider this an issue, as the video does need to get converted to 4:4:4 somewhere by the time you see it. It doesn't much matter which device does it. The bigger question is whether the UMC-1 is also converting the colorspace (YCbCr->RGB) when it does this. That has the potential to cause lots of issues with some hardware. There's the issue of perhaps not doing it right, and especially the "Studio RGB" vs "Computer/PC RGB" issue. - LoopinFool

I looked at this issue using the Spears and Muncil disc showing the diagonal lines. Having the BPD-83 output 1080P and the UMC-1 on pass through the lines were straight. Setting the BDP-83 to source direct and the UMC-1 to 1080P the lines were jagged.

not to completely stray from the topic but i had asked something similar in regards to the old toshiba hd-xa2 HD-DVD player. it uses Silicon Optix Reon HQV for upscaling. have been using this since it was released and really do not want to sell unless the umc can do an equally or better job for s-dvd. anyone care to comment? i really did not want to start an additional thread for this so sorry for the hi-jack....

Does anybody know if you can have different video options for processing on each input? For instance, can I have have auto for one input & bypass for another?

No, the video settings on the UMC-1 are global. You can change them when you switch inputs, obviously, but they cannot be assigned individually.
