It seems the USP-1 differs from just about every preamp I have encountered when it come to Tape Monitor function.
Most will route the selected source (CD/Phono/Tuner etc) to tape out and tape in will pass the signal output back from the tape.
The USP-1 seems to not output any source or even allow selection when the tape mon switch is on.
Is this normal? Not a show stopper for me but not the way I expect this option to work at all.
I have built and used many many preamps over my 40 years in the business (several as a hifi repair technician) and never come across this way of operation.

That's normal, yes. Several others noted the same thing when the USP-1 first came out, and this isn't well stated in the manual.

Unfortunately, the usage of tape monitor on the USP-1 is not what most old-time users are expecting. For many of us, we are thinking of that function as if it were an external monitor loop that would have allowed you to monitor the actual tape recording as it is being recorded. The USP-1 will not work that way. However, the XSP-1 will have a "true" tape monitor/external processor loop function, like you are accustomed to. The XSP-1 will have very similar features to that of the discontinued RSP-2.
If you have a three head tape recorder or an external processor you may want to wait for the XSP-1 to be released. For most users the USP-1 will fill their needs very well. What is your intended usage of the USP-1? Many Lounge members purchased the USP-1 to provide unrivaled analog reproduction while filling in the gaps of the UMC-1 by providing very high quality phono pre-amp and headphone amp circuitry.
Owners of the ERC-1 CD Player have discovered that coupling the ERC-1 with the USP-1 allows them to experience total analog bliss while listening to high quality CD media. A typical comment from those combining the USP-1 and the ERC-1 is, "I have rediscovered my music collection and I am on cloud-nine while listening to my CDs." ;D

Makes one wonder how they'd feel if they ever heard a high end system? Or a decent mid-fi system... Probably crap their pants.

So...are you saying the a high end system produces the infamous "brown note" (let's see who gets the Southpark reference...)?

The brown note requires HDMI 1.4a and special 3D shutter ear covers.
