My needs are simple..I have FIOS HD and a Toshiba Blu-ray player. I need a processor that will provide audio from both (5:1 from the FIOS Motorola box and the HD audio codecs for blu-ray).
Like many, I am annoyed by the highly compressed commercials on FIOS (and other carriers) that are played at max volume and I would like those to play softer...thus, I think Dolby Volume may help, but I'm not sure. I do not need or want any room tuning, I have an external Audysssey multiEQ to do that job. All I need is flat output from the UMC-1 however I will need to adjust the volumes on individual speakers/channels.
I have read that there may be a problem with FIOS and the UMC-1 when content switches between 5:1 and 2:1 which happens quite often during commercials or when changing channels. I can not live with having to intervene to make the sound work again....e.g. I don't want to have to change channels just to get sound back.
I don't know if dolby volume on the UMC-1 works independently of room equalization, I suspect it doesn't. That's OK if I can set up the UMC-1 so that my normal listening volume is full, non-equalized sound...and then if dolby volume wants to turn things down and change curves, that's probably OK.
Does anyone see any problem with what I want to do...what I expect out of the UMC-1. Fundamentally, I'm buying it for the new codecs and dolby volume....and I pretty much don't care about all the other features.

Dolby Volume worked great on my UMC-1, and it does not need the room equalization active to function. Loud commercials were completely subdued. I just could not wait any longer for them to fix the audio/channel dropout problems with my DirecTV receiver. When (if?) they get the audio/channel dropout problems solved, I think it will be perfect for your needs.
