How about a new thread discussing levels, settings, test etc...?

Any chance of adding the additional 2 channels for 7.1? That's what I am really in need of and none of the test discs I have seem to have those. Bandwidth over S/PDIF is limited and AC-3 allows for 6 channels max.

Now I don't have DVE, but I assume (I know, I know) And that's the point. Without knowing knowing the signal no conclusions can be drawn. Maybe simarddominic will tell us what signal is on his disc. I've seen people debating for months. In the end they found out that one had errors in his measurements. [glow=red,2,300]DVE use a limited pink noise. I use a SPL C weighting, slow response for measurements. And in the same way that I'v made with the internal test tone of the UMC-1, I adjust the master volume to have a 75dB on the left front channel for starting point. After I adjust all level at 75dB with the level speaker control on the UMC-1. The only use of the master volume is for the starting point to reach 75dB. [/glow] The original question was about why the poster was getting very different settings using the UMC vs. test disc. One possibility is that the master volume was set differently, another is one of the tone sets is incorrect. Which is it? That's a good questions and I would have two more: how is the player connected (analog, digital?) and does the player apply any gain? Best, Markus [glow=red,2,300]PS3 hooked up in HDMI with UMC-1 with no gain. [/glow] This being said, I have a track of solution: The internal signal of test of the UMC-1 is produced with a higher volume than the test discs. For example to have a reading of 75dB with the UMC-1, the master volume must be set to approximately 32. With DVE the volume of the UMC-1 must be to 65. On the other hand that does absolutely not answer my starting question to know if the internal test tone of the UMC-1 for the level adjustment of the speaker is reliable. Because the master volume must raise all channel equaly... And when I said that the result of the two procedure were not the sames there is an exemple: To have 75dB all channel with UMC-1 test tone: FL 0dB FR -1dB C -3.5dB SL -2.5dB SR 1.5dB To have 75dB all channel with DVE test tone: FL 0dB FR .5dB C -3.5dB SL 1.5dB SR 2dB With UMC test tone, the Left front is +1dB compare to the right front (-.5dB with DVE) and the left surround is -3dB compare to the right surround (-.5 with DVE). I don't know for you but for me it's a huge difference ! And I put this here because I strongly doubt that it is the internal UMC-1 test tones is wrong and for 4 reasons: 1. At least for the front, in normal stereo music listening, my left front is too loud compare to the right with UMC-1 calibration and it's easy to ear. Spot on with DVE calibration. 2. The results I have in level adjustments between Fronts and between rears with DVE are the same I had whit previous receivers. 3. I had 5 previous receivers and 2 of them had bad internal test tones. 4. That could explain, at least partly why Emo-Q result are so off ;D

I would think that playing tones from anything outside the UMC-1 is subject to the gain from the outside source. Any source will have a different gain which will give you different readings when playing the same tones.
If this is wrong someone please correct me.

As a rule of thumb, I always use a test tone disc through my primary source. The test tones in most, if not all of receivers/processors are unreliable and volume dependant. Mischief, yes they are subject to gain, but they are from your source component that you listen to movies on so that becomes a moot point. That is why the UMC allows for incremental dB changes per input. do some test tones put through your primary source and dial it in to whatever you like to listen at. Prior to contrary belief, 75 is just universally accepted, not the standard by any means. You can level match your speakers to whatever you want. Anyway, when you complete the process through your primary source, look at the gain structure for that source. Compare it to the gain of your secondary source, tertiary source...etc and adjust accordingly. Voila, level matched theater room no mater what source you choose.

So perhaps the Microsoft thing I posted and encoding in WMA would do the trick? A simple 7.1 PCM stream over HDMI would do the trick.

I think the issue brought up a couple posts ago wasn't overall 'level matching' of sources....it was that there may be some variation of levels from speaker to speaker (balance) depending on the source. If that's the case, then it isn't addressable using the input level adjustment. I'll play with this later and see if I'm seeing the same thing. R

For example to have a reading of 75dB with the UMC-1, the master volume must be set to approximately 32. With DVE the volume of the UMC-1 must be to 65. What type of signal is on the DVE? To have 75dB all channel with UMC-1 test tone: FL 0dB FR -1dB C -3.5dB SL -2.5dB SR 1.5dB To have 75dB all channel with DVE test tone: FL 0dB FR .5dB C -3.5dB SL 1.5dB SR 2dB With UMC test tone, the Left front is +1dB compare to the right front (-.5dB with DVE) and the left surround is -3dB compare to the right surround (-.5 with DVE). I don't know for you but for me it's a huge difference ! Those differences are insignificant. Don't forget that you do acoustic measurements, i.e. you measure the room and the speakers. Moving your SPL meter a few inches will give you different readings. Best, Markus

I would think that playing tones from anything outside the UMC-1 is subject to the gain from the outside source. Not if the signal stay digital (and no digital processing is applied).

Beta has eliminated the dropouts so far. Much improved. Thanks emotiva! Does it fix the split second audio loss when audio is resumed from a 'no audio' situation? Or does it just fix the complete drops where you have to pause and restart or switch inputs back and forth before you get audio back?

I have only recently started testing anything other than 2-channel. But, I will admit, the audio stability of the UMC-1 when watching any sort of video source is uncertain at best (with v6Beta firmware). If I were an "average consumer" or the "other half" of the technical side of the relationship that many of you were are in, I would find the UMC-1 as intolerable or unusable as many have reported. It isn't tough to find a lot of these issues with the LG BD390 connected with HDMI. I'm trying to make a detailed spreadsheet that I will share with Lonnie and crew at some point. Oh, and none of my audio dropouts are Blu-ray or HD Audio of any kind, this is Stereo PCM, Dolby Digital, etc.

I should follow my last post with this thought, though. For me, for its price, I would keep the UMC-1 as a 2-channel digital audio preamp and be elated with it. I know it's coming up short in the audio/video side of things at this point, but we do seem to be moving in the right direction.

Has anyone else noticed that it says "PLII" and not "PLIIx" on the front display? Not a big deal but I just noticed it after the beta update.

If you have a 5.1 setup, then it will only show PLII, but if you have a 7.1, then you get PLIIx. Hope this helps.

I loaded the v6 beta yesterday with no issues (WinXP in safe mode). Took about 9 minutes. I did NOT do any factory default settings this time. Everything is still correctly defined in my setup. So far no intermittent audio dropouts while watching Dish tv. Also no complete loss of audio when pausing, rewinding, etc. Just one little weirdness - I was watching the evening news from yesterday on my dvr. That audio is usually Dolby Digital. At some point I noticed that it had dropped into just Stereo mode, and the sound was coming through on my mains, but the UMC-1 display showed "Stereo -- No Audio". I was listening to the sound while being told there was no audio. wtf? I switched inputs and back and it immediately re-synced into Dolby Digital. Just this one time.
