If I read Lonnie's post telling what has been corrected in this Beta release, my audio dropout should still be a problem. But the problem is gone, I have been tying all day to get the drop problem to show its ugly fase with no luck. Not one audio drop sense I programed the new beta code. Something isnt right here problems dont fix there self. Has anyone else had this happen to them? The source for this problem has been a HD DVR cable box........... I suspect they reverted some of the changes they made in original v6 back to v5. For me, the dropout behavior is identical to how it was in v5 now (which is 500% better than v6).

The internal test tones are volume dependent. Play the tone for the FL speaker and adjust the main volume knob until SPL reads 75 dB. Then you can use the other tones, and the channel trims, to balance the other speakers. Sub should be the same, or you can adjust it if you don't like it at 75 dB. You seem to not understand what i'v said...I,M not a newbie in this matter, I'm a former tech in telecom... What I said: I adjust the left speaker at odB and I put the master volume to have 75dB on SPL...after I never touch the master again...make adjustment with the internal UMC-1 test tone on every other channel to have 75dB to the SPL. But when I make this prcedure with DVE BD test tone, the result are not the same. Conclusion: one or other test tone package are not reliable...I suspect that is the UMC-1 since when I carried out this procedure with my preceding receivers (Onkyo TX-SR805, Panny SA-XR700 etc) the resulats were the same ones.

I'm happy that problem is gone, it just seems crazy that without trying some how they fixed the problem. Also thanks for your web page, its really help me and others..... ;D

It's been a TON of work, but I have also had so much positive feedback, so it's been fun. I'm also glad you're enjoying the UMC-1 a lot more now. I really hope the next firmware takes another step in the right direction. I'm not looking for miracles, but if they improve a few more things, and then a few more, it won't be perfect, but it'll be a really solid piece for most people.

Ummmmm..............I can put them back if you want. ;D Seriously though, we have made changes to this part of the code which should improve it quite a bit. However, we haven't finished going through all the code in this section yet, so I didn't list it.

Actually you never said anything like that in the original post. A lot of people don't realize that the test tones are volume dependent and can see odd results from that. I have no prior knowledge of your familiarity with the procedure. Beta firmware installed ! All right for me except Emo-Q still useless...every time different result.
I calibrated it manualy and I think that the internal test tone for level calibration is not right...I try DVE BD test tone and the result are far away between the two.
Which test tone should I use to calibrate speakers level ?
I know that I must calibrate it to 75dB at my SPL meter for speaker but at wich level should I adjust the subwoofer if all the others speaker were at 75dB for good balance ? That being said, it really doesn't matter which tones you use - the point is to balance your speakers. Really how often do you say "I must listen to this at reference level" rather than just setting the volume where you want it. If I had to pick, I'd use the test disk levels.

OK so which ones to use: UMC or DVE, in reference to the original question? Most of us don't have our own signal generators.
I'm really not sure what your point is. We are talking about test tones here not some random noise, yes? SO wouldn't one set of -20 dB (or -30 dB) tones be equal to another?

My point is that you guys don't know what you're trying to measure. What kind of signal does the UMC-1 play back? What kind of signal is DVE? Pink noise, white noise? Level? RMS? What is your SPL meter set to? Slow or fast? A or C weighting? All of this is crucial to know. Best, Markus

Now I don't have DVE, but I assume (I know, I know) that it's -30 dBFS RMS pink noise, meant to reach a SPL of 75dB. My meter would be set to C weighting, slow. Any other questions? We are talking about tones meant to help us calibrate systems, and as such are fairly standard. I guess we have to rely on the producers of the tones to make them correct. Maybe you have enough time to sit around and make your own test disk, I have other stuff to do. The original question was about why the poster was getting very different settings using the UMC vs. test disc. One possibility is that the master volume was set differently, another is one of the tone sets is incorrect. Which is it?

Audacity is a program that as I recall can generate test tones, noise (pink/white) and maybe even sweeps. It is available for all platforms (mac/pc/linux)an you can rite the data out to all sorts of audio formats too. Google the links.

After failing again last night to load the beta with my Windows 7 laptop in safe mode, I thought I'd try the XP netbook tonight. This had previously been a failure as well when loading v6. This time it loaded the first time - no safe mode, no program disabling, just click and go . I haven't had time to test it much, but so far the audio seems more stable, having been much worse with v6 than v5.

This new Beta has been great for me. PLIIx is fixed, no more audio dropouts (so far), no loss of channels (so far).
I LIKE my UMC-1 now!

No safe mode for me. I only updated the USB drivers with Bill's links on Emonatics web page. Maybe I've been lucky, but then again maybe it's my AMD quad core processor that's not having any problems with the rest of the startup programs while updating the UMC-1.

Updated my UMC-1 to v6 beta today with Win XP in safe mode with no problems. However, I encountered a dropout of my center channel while watching Dark Knight using my PS3 via HDMI when i tried to fast forward. I already had this problem before but so far I haven't had any other problems. All is good and the sound still amazes me.

Hello,
I Installed V6 and beta friday and I notice one problem....When I change mode PLIIX to Direct or DTS to Direct, sometime the sound came very loud. Need to switch back the mode and back to normal....
Anybody have this??? I also notice a improvement in the code....

Many thanks Markus! Any chance of adding the additional 2 channels for 7.1? That's what I am really in need of and none of the test discs I have seem to have those.

Now I don't have DVE, but I assume (I know, I know) And that's the point. Without knowing knowing the signal no conclusions can be drawn. Maybe simarddominic will tell us what signal is on his disc. I've seen people debating for months. In the end they found out that one had errors in his measurements. The original question was about why the poster was getting very different settings using the UMC vs. test disc. One possibility is that the master volume was set differently, another is one of the tone sets is incorrect. Which is it? That's a good questions and I would have two more: how is the player connected (analog, digital?) and does the player apply any gain? Best, Markus
