There seems to be quite a few ERC1 for sale there. I wonder why?......Could it be that this player did not turn out to be what they thought it was?, or consumers making purchases out of curiousity?.................just curious ;D

I have my opinion, but I shall not speak it here. I would like to hear it if you decide to speak. I did have one for a while, but decided to sell it. It's not that it was a bad player or had issues, I just really enjoy my DAC much more. The original intent of my purchase was to use in my 2 channel room which I did for a while until I found a DAC I liked and got a PC built. I then moved it into the main system and had planned on keeping it, but decided I wanted a new phono stage. So I sold the ERC-1 to fund and make room for the phono stage. I just didn't see myself using it that much when I have my PC and DAC in the main system with so many songs at the touch of my finger tips.

I have my opinion, but I shall not speak it here. My assumption is that these people bought them at $319 when they were on sale, and after using them for a little while can now maybe break even or pocket a couple of dollars from the sale. Nothing wrong with that. Sonically, this thing is very impressive. It sounds better than my SACD player playing CD's, and sounds different from my DAC.

Kevb, I curious to know how in your opinion the ERC sounds different than your DAC. I'm also planning on getting a good DAC and wonder whether keeping a CD player makes sense. I understand that ripping compresses (even Apple Lossless); however, a high quality DAC produces great sound nevertheless. Steve

Steve I find that the player is smoother and controlled sounding than my DAC, but my DAC is more dynamic and forceful in the bass, albeit with a little sharper sound than might be accurate. I like the fact that I have different flavors, as some music suits one better than the other. I have not yet gone to computer-based audio, although I am putting together a PC for just that purpose.

All 4 of the erc-1s on Audiogon were sold within days of each other last week. I am looking for one to start off my new system. With the spring pricing of the ERT 8.3 and the xda-1, I will be up and running soon. I think cables and interconnects are in order too. Not sure when the new ones are coming so the search is on.

I understand that ripping compresses (even Apple Lossless); however, a high quality DAC produces great sound nevertheless. Lossless means just that: without losing information. It "compresses" in the same way a WinZip file does. Rather than tossing out 1s and 0s like lossy formats, it sees 00000000 and instead says "8 0s". All information on the original CD is preserved. This is true for FLAC as well as its redundant, proprietary, pointless cousin ALAC.

I know that the reason I sold mine was that I basically had too many sources. When I went with the SQ Touch playing FLAC via my PC I saw no reason to keep a dedicated CD player. This is obviously the challenge that all CD players face as digital downloads move forward.

What's a CD? It's a small shiny disc with engraved "pits", and that spins fast around an axle with a clamping mechanism, and the "pits" are read by a red optical laser lens. Here: CD: Compact Disc

I really like my ERC and the error correction on it is exceptional. I still have not gone with the downloads yet and probably will not until such time that there is a consolidated portable standard. I have CD Players in home, boat and cars so for me I will continue to collect the little shiny buggers. ;D

Probably due to Oppos new all in one players on the market. I agree, I think because the Oppo probably sounds just as good to some that it just does more. The ERC is a great player but wish it would play Blurays etc as well.
