I've had a few glitches, after installing the v6ß firmware, regarding audio via my BDP-83 and I wonder if anyone else is seeing the same?
Basically, I notice that audio will not pass through the UMC-1. One day it was SACD and DVD-A that just produced a little hiss, the next was DVD. The video is always available, just no audio. A combination of turning off/on various components or rebooting typically remedies the situation. ANyone notice any issues like these?
On a side note, should PLIIx or Neo:6 matrixing of a DD 2.0 track always result in audio info from the surround speakers? I was watching a new DVD last night (The Shield: The Complete Series Collection) and all I get is hiss from the surrounds. Now this was also in the midst of the above problem, so it's hard to tell if there some other issue afoot.

Which firmware package are you using in the OPPO?
Haven't noticed anything here, but will play with it today.

Well, that's something I have to check on. I can say that I haven't updated in a while, so likely not the latest. But I have never had any kind of problem with it before,, either. I'm going to update when I get home today. I used to have it hooked into the LAN at home, but when I rearranged equipment I took out the network connections. I guess it's time to hook it back up.

I'm using the OPPO with the latest update, but I don't have a UMC-1 yet. No problems here...

No problems here, but I don't use HDMI for the audio -- just to connect to the TV. Not sure which firmware version I have, I will have to check. I've only had my player a short while.

I don't have have the bdp-83 in my system, but I am experiencing all of the same anomalies as you describe. Startup is sometimes requiring that my dvr be reset. Changing inputs has caused the static noise from the speakers a few times. It is a different noise than before with the sound spike.
I have given up on pliix again and I really want it to work right in my 7.1 setup. The sound usually starts out sounding right from all speakers, but eventually the sides will drop out, but maintain the backs. I can hear a low volume static from the sides when I put my ear up to them and maybe some very faint program information. Upping the gain to the sides doesn't help. Sometimes with all the surrounds engaged the volume from them will seem to drop over time to the point that even applying +10 gain to all barely produces sound to the listening area. Reset and back to normal.
I should say that I am noticing most of the speaker shut-offs and volume issues occur when viewing my directv input and I have not spent much time with dvd/blu recently. But it may link up with your noticing problems with tv related dvd material. For what its worth, direct mode fixes things reasonably well for me, but its not at all what I want to use.

Bort, that certainly does sound very similar. I agree with the "almost" nonexistent surround info (5.1 here). This really only seems to happen with the matrixing post processing (Neo:6, PLIIx) and so far with DD 2.0 material, so direct works, but obviously no surround.
The problem with another DVD (Elektra) has me stumped as that's a DD 5.1 soundtrack, and I got picture but no sound, set to DD for mode, and even direct didn't do anything for that one.
I need to play around with this a bit more.

The thing I've had trouble with is M/C Analog with SACDs. It seems that the only way I can get it to work is to shut off HDMI audio in the OPPO. Even then, I have to change the mode in the UMC-1 to Direct.
So if I want to have M/C analog for SACDs and HDMI audio for movies, I have to go in to the OPPO and turn the "HDMI Audio" switch on and off and then I have to manually switch the UMC-1 mode to Direct. When I called Emo tech support for help, I was told that I should just run HDMI for everything because M/C analog won't pass advanced movie codes like DTS-Master Audio.
Notwithstanding my surprise to hear that OPPO can't do what they have been doing since I bought my early adopter BDP-83 (pass advanced movie formats over M/C analog), I viewed the suggestion to bag M/C analog or manually switch to Direct in the UMC-1 (after disabling HDMI audio in the OPPO) as a fairly worthless response.
Next time I decide to take this issue on, I'll ask to speak to Lonnie first.

Hmmm...and here I was thinking that I would try the M/C connection as an alternative. Maybe I'll give it a go and see if I have similar issues. As far as remember the Oppo passed DTS-HD, and TrueHD fine when I had it hooked up to a non-HDMI Pioneer Elite. p.s. that is quite a PITA work-around, BTW.

As I posted in another thread, the UMC-1 is finicky with the multichannel analog in ( I have no video input running from my multichannel source). I also noticed that if the DVD-A or SACD is already playing, the UMC-1 does not play the 7.1 channel input (there is a second of sound, then nothing). In order to use the multichannel input, I have to make sure the source is not playing anything, switch to multichannel, then start the source.

I just got the UMC-1 this morning. It is paired with the Oppo player (with the most current firmware). I have HDMI audio set to bitstream in the player. I have looked at a few blurays (Master and Commander, The Fall, and Snow White), when I hit the INFO button on the UMC-1 remote I never see any sample rate higher than 48kHz. I was expecting to see a lot higher bit rate with these great bluray audio. I have looked through the settings on oppo and umc-1 and am at a loss. Any Idea? thanks. By the way my firmware version on the umc-1 says 6.02.00.06. ( I expected to see 6.02.00.04 or 6.02.00.11)

I tried a DVD-Audio (and umc-1 displayed 96kHz), and an SACD (umc-1 displayed 88kHz). So maybe all is well.... Everything really sounds good!!!

However, I did update my firmware on the umc-1 tonight and played both SACD and DVD-A. My umc lit up with Multi PCM 88.4 for SACD and Multi PCM 96K for dvd-a Hope that helps.

With respect to SACD and HDMI... why not create another input setting with the M/C inputs just for SACD with no video (NONE)?

My bdp-83 seems to work OK with my UMC in the limited testing I did. I tried one of each type of medium: CD, DVD, DVA-A, SACD, Blu-ray and I didn't get the issues you mentioned.
I did have a problem that on the DTS-MA blu-ray I tested (I Robot) most of the time I skipped, rewinded, paused etc I lost all audio even when the display still said DTS-MA. Only way I could fix was to change inputs and back. I am running what came on the UMC which appears to be a version between the official v6 and the v6Beta. I have all default settings - just testing to make sure things worked before I hooked everything up.
