Sorry to start a new thread about this, but can you tell me what kind of USB cable is needed to do these FW updates? I heard it was the same that you use for a printer. I have two printer USB cables, and I was unable to connect it to the UMC-1. I tried to do the beta updates, but my computer was showing that 'no device was connected'. I was wondering too, when you connect to the back of the unit, do you hear a click? My cable fits the the slot, but it doesn't grip well. It's very loose and just slides off with the slightest move. It seems like the USB port is bad. Thanks for any advice. I have to call Emotiva on Monday.

It sounds like you have the right type of cable. Any chance you could take a picture and post it? Did you update the USBXpress drivers, as well?

Does your computer offer USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 ports? It needs to be 2.0 for the update.
How long is your cable? The spec for USB 2.0 is no longer than 5 meters and many runs of even less than 16 feet have trouble. Are you using a USB cable extender? If so, they won't work for longer lengths unless they are active and even then many will not hook up reliably.

It may be that you need the proper drivers. I would suggest going to Bill's Emonatics site, where you can download and install the latest USBXpress device drivers: www.emonatics.com/UMC-1FW.shtmlIf you are able to put the cable into the slot and it seems like it is supposed to fit, then it is probably the right cable. You would know if it wasn't (either it wouldn't go in at all, or else the fit would be obviously wrong, like cable is way too small for the USB port, etc.)

okay I think I may have installed the USBXpress device drivers but didn't load them into the device manager. I had to do the manual install of the drivers, the recommended automatic install didn't work. I was able to install successfully. When I go to the Device Manager, should I see USBXpress under USB controllers list? I don't see that anywhere. I am usually not this dense. I do have USB 2.0 ports. I am only trying to load the Beta @. I already have v.6 on the UMC. The cable is about four feet long and the other is about 6. Thanks

Here is the cable. It goes in fine, it just doesn't seem as secure. It slides in as far as it can go in, and it is seems loose, does not 'click' or seem to have a good connection. It makes a noise on the laptop when connected but on the Upgrader program, the little graphic that shows the computer connected to the device, there is a red x. No device connected.

The fact the cable fits does NOT mean it is USB 2.0 capable. USB1.x uses the same connectors but has @#*& bandwidth.
Ensure the cable is USB 2.0

How old is your computer? Is it a laptop or desktop/tower PC? USB 2.0 is relatively new to PCs and if yours still has 1.1 USB it will not work. The same problem can exist with the USB cable itself. If the cables are more than a few years old, they may not support USB 2.0. A new USB cable of about 6 feet should be pretty cheap. You will want a standard A/B printer cable. The square shaped connector should not be as loose fitting as you were describing so it might be worth your effort to get a new cable anyway. Good luck.

I actually completed my v6 update with Win XP and USB 1.1 with little problems. The update ran a little slower but once done, I didn't really encounter any problems i hadn't beforehand. However, this is a little concerning to hear that it wouldn't work with 1.1

Depending upon your Windows operating system, you should be getting some version of a message saying something to the effect that the OS can't recognize a USB device that has been plugged in. Are you getting any such message?

However, this is a little concerning to hear that it wouldn't work with 1.1 Personally I wouldn't be concerned, especially if your update went smoothly. Actually I don't recall that anyone from Emotiva saying that USB 1.1 wouldn't work, my older WinXP HP laptop has USB 1.1 and I did the initial 3 part upgrade path from V5 to V6 with it, and it went successfully. I've since done the beta 1 & beta 2 upgrades with my Win 7 Pro desktop since it goes way faster. I could be wrong about USB 1.1 and got lucky, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you have successfully updated the FW using a PC with USB 1.1 then the USB driver you installed is compatible with both USB 1.1 and 2.0. The information on the web site indicated the driver was for use with USB version 2.0.
Since you cannot load the FW without installing the USB Driver, it was an logical assumption that you could not perform the upgrate without using a PC with USB 2.0. So it appears that the driver is compatible with both USB versions or you have a USB 2.0 connector on your PC. It wouldn't be the first time that a driver made for one version works with the older one also -- that is a unexpected bonus. Keep your fingers crossed and hope it continues to work for you. ;D

Well let's all hope it continues to work! I have no doubts that my PC is actually USB 1.1 because it's nearly 10 years old now.

I have been able to update from V5 to V6 and then to B1 and B2. I have tried and had no connection. I tried again the the connection was made. I don't know why the connection is so loose or why it sometimes fails. I don't want to sent it to Emotiva to have it looked at now. I'll wait until the upgrade to HDMI 1.4 is available and have them look at the USB connection when they do the upgrade.

Are you getting any such message? I got a beep when it connected, but I do not show any device under my computer, or when the updater is open. I do not get any other message that the OS can't recognize the USB device. I am using a dell laptop, and it is only about a year a few months old. It has windows vista, and I am pretty sure its USB2.0, although I cannot verify that anywhere on the system. The icon on the USB port has the icon and a plus sign. Under Device manager, under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, it lists 6 Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controllers, 2 Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller, 1 USB Composite Device, and 8 USB Root Hub entries. To be honest, I dont understand what these are, what they signify and what ports they relate to on the actual laptop (I have 4 ports on the laptop). I've installed the USB drivers from Emonatics, but i dont see where or if it was applied. I am going to try the update again, so I will report back. Thanks for everyone's help!

Well the updates did not work for me. The unit sort of froze, and now I have to send it back to Emotiva. I tried doing the beta update and it failed, so I started over from the beginning, and now the UMC will not power on completely. It freezes up on the loading part when you first turn it on. Then it turns off, then on again, then off. It's fried. Emotiva is sending me a new one now and they are letting me send the old one back when the new one arrives. Very happy with that. Thanks Emotiva, and thanks to everyone for their help
