HAHHAHAHHA!!! Agreed! ;D I am sure the cost of the ERC-1 would have jumped considerably. At the time I bought my ERC, I also bought the Oppo BDP83. For $100 more, not only does the Oppo play SACDs, but also DVD, DVD-A, and BLU RAY!! I seriously doubt the ERC would have been that much more costly. I think Harvey is right, even it if had cost $100, I would've still bought the ERC-1.

I'm sure there is a way to hack the ERC-1 to make it do other things, I'm sure its just a matter of turning things on and off on the chip so if any members are code writers get busy!

Would a SACD played in my blu ray player sound better than a normal CD playing in my ERC-1? I'm thinking that the DAC in the ERC-1 are better than in the UMC-1, but maybe the better content of the SACD would still make it better.

Lets pretend for a moment that I know absolutely NOTHING about SACD. (I am not really pretending)
Please tell me why I should listen to SACD instead of a regular CD or vinyl...is it for multichannel music, or is the resolution a lot better?
Yes, I know I could just "google" for the answer but I am curious as to what the "real" allure is from real audiophiles. I hope that makes sense. ;D

It is for the multichannel tracks and the higher resolution, and yes you can hear it.

And I assume these have audio resolution equal to that of a standard dvd...just without video?

The majority of SACDs are mixed in 5.1, however I believe, but not certain, that a SACD may be stereo as well. I would consider SACD audio superior to DVD audio. Quite a bit better, actually.

Just as good, I have both. If the Oppo is just as good, why did you keep the ERC-1? Honestly, I love CDs. I don't have a very good answer for you, I just really like the idea of a dedicated CD player. Plus, the ERC-1 is just cool, and it looks great with my Emo amps. I think the main reason I'll keep it is because it is a damn good CD player. And if I ever need one somewhere other than my media room, I could always move it.

And if I ever need one somewhere other than my media room, I could always move it. I can understand your reason. I have an old Sony 5 disc CD player that I have not been in my main system for years. I've been using DVD and then BD players ever since. The ERC-1 brought a higher level of sound quality to my current system, but honestly in retrospect if I had known I could have bought one unit to do both I probably would have done that instead. I just wanted a true CD player again to see what I was missing. If I didn't see an improvement over using my BD player I would have returned the ERC-1. But damn my UMC-1, ERC-1 and XPA-5 all with black trim do look great!!!!!

That right there is a big reason why I decided to buy an ERC-1. I thought (and still think) the Oppo 83 is an find CD player via it's analog outputs, but after reading all the positive words on the ERC-1, I just had to compare them for myself. If there is a difference, it is by the slightest of margins. And I will underscore, this is in my room with my equipment and my ears. Someone else's comparison may yield different results.

I have a cd thats comes with a seperate sacd and a regular cd (2 channel mix). I've played the cd on the erc with a usp. The sacd on the ps3 through the umc.
The sacd sounds very slightly smoother, but because the ps3 fan is noisy, I listen to the cd on the erc.

So ? How does the ERC respond when you put a SACD in and it does not happen to have a HDCD or CD layer. Will it get stuck or hurt it? Just wondering, just got mine hooked up. Bought 3rd hand, thanks Justin
