Greetings, As the title said, has anyone having the same problem with SONY bluray player (BDPS550)? My player is 14 months old (yes, it's out of warranty, just when I need it ). It suddenly displays "NO DISC" in any kind of disc I tried to play (blue ray, dvd, audio cd). I unplugged everything, wait for 5 minuted, reconnect, and perform firmware update, but no success. I contacted SONY technical support, and they said it requires service. The cost for service is probably equal to the cost of buying a new player. Any suggestion? thanks, hunghung (BRP playerless)

I haven't had any problems with my 550 but this issue usually means a problem with the laser.

If you used an AMEX card that doubles your manufacturers warranty then you should opt for a warranty claim through American Express.

Too bad, this player was a birthday gift from my wife.
I guess it's time for a new bluray player. Hmmm...OPPO?

Too bad, this player was a birthday gift from my wife. I guess it's time for a new bluray player. Hmmm...OPPO? It is unfortunate that your Sony has failed so soon. My first BDP was a Sony BDP-300. IMO it is a piece of junk and now is connected to my daughter's TV. The time it takes to go from switching it on to watching a BluRay is so long I could just about go out for lunch and be back in time to watch the start of the movie. I purchased the Oppo with a zone/region modification and it has proven to be excellent. Very fast to start and load, great SQ and excellent PQ. The remote also gives you direct access to disc features that would normally require you to access through the disc menu. Cheers, Dave.

The newer Sony BDP-S570 retails for only $249, has wireless Wi-Fi, HDMI version 1.4, 3D-ready, USB ports (front & rear), streams all type of music and movies, plays stereo & mutichannel SACDs (DSD bitstream direct from its HDMI output), is the fastest player in the world (instant loading), has excellent Blu-ray picture, great DVD picture, and it's a Sony! ...There are some newer Universal Denon models too. * Review: @ www.soundandvisionmag.com/tests-reviews/media-players/2010/04/sony-bdp-s570* Video: @ www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbV8vf7nuMA&feature=related

I have the S550 in my bedroom lineup - my wife uses it almost daily and its worked flawlessly since the day it came out (I had one on preorder at the sony store before they came out).
I have the Oppo BDP-83 in the theater downstairs. For Blu-ray playback I could not tell any difference between the Oppo and Sony, but the upscaling of plain old dvds in the Oppo is excellent. Also you get SACD + DVD-A capability with the Oppo.

Hey Sony is fine, as I said about the newer BDP-S570 for only $250; and it plays SACDs too. * I'm just a little anti-bias about Sony's products, that's all. Doesn't mean people have to subscribe to my own personal opinion, right? But I'm with you, I prefer the Oppo BDP-83. ;D

thanks a lot for all of your suggestions.
Fortunately, I currently have 150$ gift card from crutchfield that offset the cost for buying a new player. I still have not decided what player to buy, but SONY S1000ES caught my attention (because of 5 years warranty and it is $299). Now it is between BDP-S570 or BDP-S1000ES.

But the BDP-S1000ES is an older player without SACD playability & no HDMI version 1.4 for 3D-readiness! Plus the feature set is somehow restricted (USB, streaming, etc.).
If I was you I will keep my eyes open for the soon to be released (June) BDP-S770. There is also the new line up of Universal Blu-ray players from Denon.
