I have a bit of an odd issue. I am running an Onkyo tx-sr705 for pre/pro and rear amplification. It has always been solid until recently.
I began to hear random high pitched metallic sounding chirps from my speakers. A chirp is the best way I can describe it. It's not a single tone or a sweep, but sounds closer to an annoying chirp or maybe a metal mallet hitting a thick, dampened metal object (quick piercing, but somewhat dully metallic, sound and then gone).
Here's what I have found:
It only happens with Dolby Digital signals. This signal often comes from HD stations while watching TV, but I also reproduced by forcing my PS3 to output Dolby. I found a firmware update for the DSP chips in my Onkyo. I applied this update, which nearly bricked my unit. I had to reset it and unplug it for 15 min before it began to work again. After that, no chirp for a couple months, but now it's back as bad as ever. I attempted a reset and unplugged it for at least an hour, but this did not correct the issue at all.
The chirp is very loud, but volume dependent. It comes from random speakers. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all. Sometimes every once in awhile. Sometimes every 30 seconds or worse. If I switch channels and change back or turn the receiver off/on it usually goes away for awhile.
It is not happening in the amps, since it is DD only and volume dependent. It is not interference on the lines, since it does not affect non-DD5.1 signals and comes from any DD source. I really don't have the money to buy a new receiver or processor right now and the Onkyo is past warranty.
I have searched all over the net for people having a similar issue, but cannot find anything. Does anyone have any ideas of what could cause this?
If there is no other solution, is there a cheap DD/pro-logic decoder that I could run my cable sound thru before passing it to the receiver? (multi-ch input is open)
