Well, I am going for the Emo 10” subs and HOPE I made a wise decision. My Monster Cable MPA amplifier died and of course, Monster is of no help once a warranty expires. It was great for the 5 years I used it to drive 2 10” passive sealed subs, the Titanic MKII drivers. Unfortunately the woman factor now plays in and she is all over me to downsize some equipment and forcing my hand to go with powered subs. Never in all my years of audio, have had I ever gone for a powered sub, preferring the versatility of an external x-over and power amp.
My main need is for music, HT is secondary for me and most of my shake comes from my furniture mounted bass-shakers anyway. Music must have tight bass and most powered subs are boom boxes.
My first audition was the Polk DSW MicroPro 2000 with its 1200W rms power rating. I figured if I liked it I would get a second one. These retail for $1400 each but selling for the discontinued price of $429. Let me be the one to say on here that it was VERY inadequate for both music and movies. I know its small but I like smaller subs, but this thing was more like 200W not the supposedly 1200W rms and 2400W peak. IT could barely fill in the soundstage at higher volumes and making noises while trying. Just one of my passive 10” subs with 300W rms going into it would flat out blow away the Polk.
Not wanting the 12” Emo subs because of their larger size and my problem with placement I went for the 10” but am VERY worried that it won’t have the power to keep me happy when I have a few beers and get Beer-Ear and need Metallica cranked up. :-)
So, I decided to call Emo today and spoke to Nick who has very positive things to say about their 10” sub and they are so cheap I just went and got 2 of them. Stay tuned for next week’s thoughts after I get them and give them the audition. Still, 200W rms…. Leaves me a tad worried they won’t do the job for cranked up moment.
However, mostly I listen to Jazz, Blues and Classical at low to moderate volumes so for the most part they should be fine if they stay tight. We will soon find out….
If it does not work out, I will buy another power amp and keep using my passive subs.
