well, i've been waiting a good long while for the umc to stabilize and have started looking in to other options and have come to a cross road. looked in to the pioneer and like what i see, but is 2 weeks away before available at local store. so i checked out local modia to see what they had in price range. sales guy showed me an older denon which is not bad at all, but compared to new pioneer he did not sway me. that is until he demoed me the old rotel rsx-1058. rotel was very impressive, but is much older and has less features than the pioneer and even the umc. pioneer goes for 900 while the rotel goes for 1200. sales guy told me that rotel uses same dacs in their receiver as they do in their pre/pros. that alone makes the rotel very appealing to me. rotel will also need a firmware update, done by modia, to allow lossless audio thru hdmi as lpcm. anybody have any experience with these models? anybody believe that the rotel is worth considering at this price point? i will be using whatever as preamp to xpa-5 to paradigm monitors. thanks in advance.

No direct experience but quite a bit of reading; here's my take: * Rotel RSX-1058 = Very nice sound but WAYYYYYY behind the curve. And certainly not worth it at 1200 clams! * Pioneer VSX-33 = Newer (check at AVS for the full scoop on that one). * Emotiva UMC-1 = Well, it's all written right in here, your call! ______________________________________ Now, my real take: * Did you knew that you can get the Onkyo TX-SR876, brand new, for only $799.99? Full 2-year warranty. That's right man! ...At accessories4less. That is a NO-BRAINER, and would do wonder not only as a very powerful receiver, but also as a FULLY LOADED pre/pro. Just check at Onkyo's own website. > Meanwhile: @ www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKTXSR876BLKA/Onkyo/TX-SR876-THX-Ultra2-Plus-140-watts-channel-7.1-Receiver-NEW/1.html* Brand New! ********************* By the way, what's wrong with your excellent 705? It will work very nicely as a pre/pro with an Emotiva XPA-5 as it has Audyssey MultEQ XT (same as the 876). But then, can you make good use of the extra goodies provided by the 876? ...THX Ultra2 Plus certification, HQV Reon-VX50 video processor (with each separate HDMI input video adjustments), ISF certification, Audyssey Dynamic EQ & Audyssey Dynamic Volume, better Dacs (Burr-Brown PCM-1796A times five), and all that JAZZ (other great stuff). ...Oh, 53.1 pounds! __ Like I said, your call!

lord, interesting reply. replacing my onkyo, although i do love it, because the rca output to sub is not sending the signal anymore. have narrowed it down to that. tried different cables, taken sub to dealer for testing and have found that the only way to get a signal to sub is to push the cable at the onkyo connection. this worked for a while but now doesn't work at all. could be a simple fix like re-soldering, but not to saavy about such things. have been very happy with it... btw, emotiva should mention it's a good idea to rerun audyssey when adding their amp. everything sounded great with straight hook up but sounded so much better after rerunning audessey. that was huge! was not looking for a rotel for the very same reasons you mentioned. way behind as far as feature set. but have been steering away from onkyo because everything i have demoed, Pioneer, denon, and the rotel all sounded cleaner than my onkyo/xpa-5 setup. the only one that came close to my setup as far as power and dynamics was the rotel. all were using their own built in amps, no external power amps. was thinking the weak link in my setup was the onkyo, but i could be mistaken. and the onkyo is 3yrs old. may or may not have something to do with it. if i'm after the latest and greatest, have been leaning toward pioneer elite or denon. wish umc was up to par but we are all still waiting on that. you also make some good points. think i will confuse myself even more and take another look at the newer onkyos. i just love making these types of decisions! ;D

Well Indian, you got the right idea with Emotiva power amp(s). Now you just need a good pre/pro (or receiver to use as one). * Have you consider the Integra DHC-40.1 pre/pro? ...Or look for an older Onkyo PR-SC886P? A lot of people including myself (886) are very happy with this combination (XPA-2 & XPA-5). - I gave you that link on the 876, because I own it and at that price it's a fantastic deal. You don't even need external amplification (in most cases) with this beast. But like you said, it's good you audition some for yourself and pick the one you like most. Good luck on your journey!

I'm going with the Pioneer VSX-32 myself. It should be shipping any time now and I expect to pick one up for slightly over $500.
The specs/feature set are pretty impressive.

This looks like some more issues caused by all the "Rule Changes" forced upon the industry by the License Holders. These changes are plaguing all Manufacturers' new product releases. No brand is immune to these issues. It is going to take a while to discover solutions and implement them. Until then, it is some what of a crap shoot in finding the right combination of products that will play nice together. This is one of the issues this forum is very familiar with because the UMC-1 is impacted by those same rules changes. Some UMC-1 owners are experiencing no problems working with other gear, while others are having the same problem the new Pioneer Elite Receivers are having. If the UMC-1 otherwise performs the way you would like and has the features you want, you may as well wait and see if Emotiva solves their remaining issues. ;D Good luck whatever way you decide to go.
