Steve, I'm a little confused about your setup. Are you saying that you currently have two 6.2's driven by a UPA-2, plus one Ultra 12 sub, in the family room and you are not getting satisfactory low bass (you say "extension") from the sub when you are in the adjoining open kitchen (or are you talking about the upper bass from the 6.2's)? You are thus considering replacing the 6.2's with 8.3's? The questions I would have is what are you using for the preamp, the Marantz 2252? Exactly how do you now have the bass management handled (how are the 6.2's and sub now wired and is the crossover handled)?
Depending on your answer I see some potential choices.
.....Get a second Ultra 12 to go with the 6.2's. Another possibility is to upgrade to two UPA-1's or the XPA-2
.....Get the 8.3's and run them full range but cross over to the sub at about 60Hz.
.....Get the 8.3's and run them as "small" and cross over to the sub at 60Hz (or even add a second Ultra 12 to the 8.3's).

Steve, With a large area like you are dealing with the ERT-8.3 would be an excellent idea. Each speaker has dual 8" woofers and will move a lot more air than the ERM-6.2; and to get the impact you are looking for you need to move a LOT of air. You may also need two ULTRA-12 depending on the room's size, shape and construction materials on all surfaces. I would start blending the subs by crossing at 80 Hz and then change it to 70 then 60 and then 50 Hz. The crossover point that best blends with your mains is where you should permanently set the sub woofer. The room's acoustic properties will determine which crossover will work best when blending the subs to your mains. The 8.3s can easily reproduce frequencies down to the upper 30s, but I think you will find that the sub works best when crossed somewhere between 50 and 80. Have fun experimenting.

How well would The Ultra 12 sub match with the Ert-8.3 for 2 channel music. .....any replies would be greatly appreciated. Steve, although you'll get some response here in my review thread, please post your question as a new thread in the Subwoofer forum instead of here. That's where it really belongs. Thanks

If frequencies below 120 Hz are truly non directional It is generally accepted that frequencies below 80Hz are non directional and frequencies from 80-120Hz and above are directional. That's what you think, but can you hear it too? ...I mean from where they're not coming from? ;D
