I am using the configuration shown below to connect my iPad to my UMC-1. The sound card is an older Turtle Beach card which seems to work without any specific drivers on the iPad. If the XDA-1 will support the USB out of the iPad, I'll order one in a heartbeat when they come out!

Couldn't use just use an Airport Express to connect to your system and then use your iPad to control the AE?

AE doesn't appear to work with the iPad. I did a web search and it doesn't seem to be supported at this time.

I have all my FLAC files on a computer that feeds my DAC. I use Media Monkey as an iTunes replacement, and there is a $10 add-on called MonkeyTunes that works with the free Remote app. No wires, no hassle, works fantastic. Screen pic. There are other apps to accomplish this same (more or less) thing. iPeng for Squeezebox, etc.

^^this is the way to go.
My sole source is iTunes via airtunes to my dac. I don't have an iphone anymore (switched to android in April) there is an android app that functions mostly the same as the remote program. While I'm not completely thrilled with the airport express (probably the weakest link in my chain), the convenience is unmatched. Unfortunately for me to step it up a notch, I'm afraid I'm looking at $$$$..

It looks like you might be even happier the with the new AirPlay support. It is supposed to work with video and may well work with audio from iPhone/iPad too.

He demo'ed the app on his iPad today and it worked like a (very) large Harmony 1000/1100 remote! All wireless. I believe that it will also stream music as well. I'm not an (Cr)Apple person but the Droid app interest me as I'll be getting a Droid soon.
