I am thinking of purchasing an amp for strictly two channel listening. I've narrowed down my choices to either the XPA-3 or two UPA-1's. Both have plenty of power for my requirements. Since both choices are about the same price, is there any sonic advantage to choosing one over the other?

I have had both setups in my system at one time or another and I prefer the UPA-1s for music. There wasn't a huge difference in SQ but there was a enough of a noticable difference in separation, soundstage, depth, etc. I'm running a pair of 1s in our game room and the sound is fantastic... ;D

Thanks for the reply. I was leaning in the direction of using two mono amps. It's good to hear from someone who has actual experience with both setups.

i had the twins and the xpa-2 , i stayed with the xpa-2 cause it had more balls at lower volumes.

Since my listening room is only 12 x 15, the XPA-2 is probably overkill.

My room is about the same and a pair of UPA-1s through Magnepan MMGs is sublime. What speakers are you using?

I have three pairs I rotate through the listening room. All were built by yours truly. And all are 4ohm impedance. First is a 2-way with Peerless drivers. The second pair is a three-way with a passive radiator. Both pairs have crossovers designed by Dennis Murphy who does the crossovers for Salk Sound. The third pair is a prototype I did for a start up speaker company. The drivers are Scanspeak and Audio Technology, with the crossover designed by Phil Bamberg of BESL. Supplementing them all when necessary is a 300 watt DIY subwoofer.

Aside from the fact it's more than I want to spend, I'm afraid if I did buy an amp with that much power, I might kill myself!

Having too much available power and not using it is better than having too little and clip the signal to those wonderful speakers you have.
