I don't get why the cd player and amps have XLR connections while the pre-amp does not.

Which preamp are you talking about?

I'm assuming he means why would they release a cd player with balanced output whenever none of Emotiva's current pre/pro's (at the time that it was released up to now) have balanced inputs...
I'm guessing they were planing to have the XSP-1 and XMC-1 out much sooner...they're unpredictable like that, but worth the wait.

I don't get why the cd player and amps have XLR connections while the pre-amp does not. ? U-series has no XLR, except the UPA-1 ERC-1 is one-size-fits-all CD player. BTW, the ERC-1 sounds superior if you output digital (coaxial or optical) to a great DAC. Mine takes your breath away.

I wouldn't think you'd need the ERC-1 then if you're using an external DAC. Any CD player with a decent transport would sound the same in that case wouldn't it?

Some transports are better than others, plus the ERC-1 is great about playing CDs that arent in the best shape. I have a Cambridge 640C and if any CD isnt perfect it starts skipping.

I don't get why the cd player and amps have XLR connections while the pre-amp does not. ? Many of the older Emotiva pre/pros came with both RCA and XLR connections on them. Several of the soon to be released pre/pros will also have both connector types. You just happen to catch them while the few current offering don't have the XLR connections. The items you are looking for will be shipping soon or you can look for used Emotiva pre/pros that have them.

Yes, the ERC-1 does a very nice job of tracking CD's. Only once did it skip. I cleaned the CD and that cured it. But I've played CD's that cause problems on my Onkyo player but were perfect on the ERC-1.

Amps have it too but not the pre(s), and I am indeed talking about currently available gear. In general, but also as a company, it is best to look further than your nose is long, as we say in Dutch. If you didn't bother to include XLR because the current pre-amp you sell doesn't have them, than first of all, customers with older/other (Emo or not) pre-amps with XLR would be untempted and second, when you do bring out a pre-amp with XLR in the end, you need to change your ERC-1 to have XLR and you annoy people who bought the ERC-1 without XLR but wanted to get the XSP-1 but will be untempted because the ERC-1 they bought doesn't have XLR and so would be forced, reluctantly, to buy a new ERC-1 with XLR. If this isn't clear, someone could make an Exel sheet here! You see? Sometimes you need to think ahead. ;D

Okay, I thought a moment longer on this one. The question is not: "Why no XLR on USP-1 pre-amp?", but rather: " Why bother with XLR on the ERC-1?" Now that Lonnie "confessed" that the discrete output stage of the XDA-1 (DAC pre-amp) is superior to that in the ERC-1, making that serious anal audiophiles will add the XDA-1 to the ERC-1 (even do without analogue pre-amp), those XLR outs will be of little use, because the output of the ERC-1 to XDA-1 is digital ofcourse. Emotiva could have made a XLR-less ("Ultra" series) CD-player, but I doubt the $399 bargain prices could be lower because of that, unless they provided a plastic remote. A $499 "real Reference" ERC-2 with the output stage of the XDA-1 would be nice, but what if you wanted to add a computer or the optical out of the Oppo Blu-ray? Add some digital inputs and the price could be rather close to ERC+XDA. Especially with volume control.

ok... I get what you mean about why bother with the CD player having xlr in the first place. However, looking at a 2 channel cd/pre/amp here at Emotiva, it seemed odd looking at the *current* lineup. You shouldn't have to think that hard to answer a simple question. Your wasting your breath on this.

A simple question can lead to a complicated answer. A lineup is always a snapshot. The big picture might be... bigger!

You could have simply said you don't know the answer, because you obviously don't. But then, there wouldn't have been any need for you to post in the first place.
