I know previous discussions have pitted the XPA-1 vs UPA-1. I am looking at the differences for center channel only. Is it really worth the extra $$$ to have an XPA-1 for the center. I will be driving a Paradigm CC-690 v5.

Nice looking speaker - why not try a UPA-1 (you have 30 days to give it a workout) and see if it'll do the job. I bet it will. But if money is not an object, then why not an XPA-1. It'll do the job too.

The 30 day return is nice. However, I do not want to be doing this from Canada. I think the UPA-1 would be sufficient for 90% of what I listen to via music and Blu-Rays. However, the decision comes down to that extra 10% whereby the XPA-1 will provide all I need and more. Additionally, if I buy the XPA-1, I could always buy another later and use the 2 for my mains(L/R) and move my XPA-2 to surround duty. This would give me more flexibility. With the UPA-1, I would not do this. If I buy it for the center channel, thats where it would stay. Having a difficult time making the right decision.

The Paradigm CC-690 has an in room sensitivity of 93dB. The XPA-1 will drive this loudspeaker to its SPL limit without amplifier distortion while the UPA-1 will be on the edge. However, the UPA-1 will easily drive it within the THX output standard.

Perhaps my ears are hyper sensitive, but my UPA-1 drives my CC-570 to ear bleeding levels, as my other two do for the 100s.
Probably silly to ask, but do people listen to music / movies that friggin' loud?

It would really depend on how big the room where you'll use the amp. Besides you'll just use it for center channel where there would be minimal low frequencies. Also remember when you double the power, you will only gain +3 db (+3 on the center channel gain?)

I agree, I also love my UPA-1s. To my ears, my system now sounds better than ever.

+ 1 on the UPA 1's. Have had mine for over two months now and I'm still amazed at the quality and QUANTITY of the sound - Power with finesse

If I am not mistaken, the CC-690 is bi-amp capable is it not? Why not get 2 UPA-1 amps and bi-amp that bad boy! All you would need is a Y splitter cable, extra speaker wire and an extra interconnect for the 2 amps.
