hey all, was thinking of selling my XPA5 and buying a UPA5 cause of the deal they are having. would i notice a huge difference in headroom? i live in a townhouse now and dont crank it like i use too.
i would be putting a bit over $200 back in the bank if i did this move. i have a potential buyer already.
any thoughts??

What speakers are you using? If they are Maggies or something, I'd keep the XPA. Otherwise, the UPA should be all you need. I love my UPA-5. It's not powering my mains, but it does a great job with my easy to drive center and surrounds.

Will you always be in a townhome? Is being a homeowner in your future plans? In this situation you might want to consider long-term as well? Having too much power has never been a problem, but not enough for your future power hungry, not-so-efficient speakers and you may be wishing you had that extra wattage and headroom. Just some thoughts to chew on!

Headroom? you only gain +3db with the XPA-5 ;D 3 clicks(?) and they would be similar. Just mt 2 cents.

With regards to power, doubling the amplifier power does not double the loudness. The sound from the speakers would not be "twice as loud"; it would only be "a little louder," an increase of 3 decibels. Crank the volume up a little and you're good to go.

A UPA-5 will drive reasonably efficient speakers (~90dB) very well.
So it looks like the question is: Do you need the $200 enough to justify selling a perfectly good XPA-5 and replacing it with a UPA-5?
If you don't, keep the XPA-5 and enjoy it. If you do, sell the XPA-5 and enjoy your new UPA-5.
Either way, I think you'll be satisfied. ;D

About 'cranking the system', my UPA-5 is driving 'inefficient' towers (about 86 - 88?) in a 12' X 14' and I like my movies LOUD. And as far as my wife is concerned, the UMC-1's volume can only go up to 50 - daytime ONLY. One time I cranked the volume up to about 60 (my wife's busy doing something in the farthest corner of the yard) and she came running back to the house! I guess you have an idea how this story ended. ;D ;D ;D

Why not purchase the upa-5 for the surrounds and us the xpa-5 to bi-amp your front speakers? after all this i may just keep the xpa 5. after all the disconnecting, packing, taping, driving to get it shipped, carrying the beast, and waiting for it to arrive safe. is it really worth the $200 to do all that? i am starting to not think so. again i jumped the gun
