I'm in the process of trying to decide if I really need the XPA-5 or can I go for the UPA-5. My fronts are Polk RTi70 (8 ohm, 20-250 watts, 90 db) along with CSi30 center, surrounds and sub (can't recall numbers off those). My current receiver is a Pioneer VSX-1014 (rated 110 watts which I'm sure it's no where near that) that will hopefully be changed to UMC by Christmas. My basement area is 18x24 carpeted, curtains, and pictures on walls. If I go UPA-5 i might add two UPA-1s to use for stereo. Thanks for any input.
ALSO: would I see any significant improvement by going from Bellari VP129 to USP for my Music Hall 5.1 turntable?

The UPA-5 would be perfectly capable, and a great suitable match for all your actual Polk speakers! And if you add two UPA-1s in the future for Stereo listening, that would be even better! - And at the sale price of the UPA-5 right now, what's not to like? * Regarding your turntable, sorry, can't help you on that. Mr. Ben is the turntable man around these quarters.

The Pioneer VSX-1014TX-K was rated at 110 wpc 20 HZ - 20,000HZ @ 8 ohm, 0.09% THD with all channels driven. Whether or not it actually achieves that I guess is debatable. However, I would think you might be surprised if you hear much of an improvement with a UPA-5 at 125 wpc. That Pioneer series of receivers is THX compliant and have a reputation as power houses. If you are eventually going with a UMC-1 and a power amp solution, if it were me I'd get the XPA-5.

That series of Pioneer receivers were/are indeed quite good power wise; but sound is a little harsh (edgy) when pushed. The UPA-5 will fix that very nicely. * Here's a review (with full power lab tests) of the Pioneer VSX-1017TXV-K (same series as the 1014, but the 2007 model): - Review: @ www.hometheatermag.com/receivers/108svs/- Lab tests: @ www.hometheatermag.com/receivers/108svs/index5.html_____________________ Chappy, why don't you upgrade your receiver for a newer one with HDMI latest version and with the new audio decoders? Like the VSX-1020-K for example. Then use it as a pre/pro with the Emo UPA-5. The 1020 is a super duder of a receiver. The XPA-3 is now on sale. Something for you to think about. Power your fronts with the xpa-3 and rears with the receiver. See: emotiva.com/xpa3.shtm
