Hey there. My setup is quite similar to yours, so I may be able to help. - UMC-1 feeding the following:
- Front: Studio 100 v3, each powered by UPA-1
- Center: Studio CC570 v3, powered by a UPA-1
- Rear: Studio 40 v3, powered by a UPA-2
My room is approximately 20' x 22' with a 16' vaulted ceiling. My living room is also open to a 16' x 14' kitchen through a large walkway and window (no glass, but not sure of the architectural term). So, I have a fairly large volume like yourself. I can play my stereo at deafening levels, and the amps don't break a sweat. They still run cool and sound phenomenal. I know I definitely don't need any more power than what they provide. I don't see how the XPA-1 is worth over double the cost.

Another question I have......
In terms of clarity of sound, will the upa 1 be that much more noticeable than the power from the dspa1?
That's why I was thinking of just going gusto and get the xpa 1s. That way for sure the sound quality loudness and clarity should be night and day!

If you've got the money, to me, it's a no brainer. Always go for more power. I read lots of guys doing the math on threads like this one and stating things like "you don't need that much power. It's only + 3 or 4 decibels, can't hardly tell." Or sometimes, "the lower power amp can go to 110 decibels, who'd ever go louder than that?"
It's seldom about peak volume. It's about control. Usually the higher power amp will hold the speakers tighter and better sound will result.
Yes with everything audio, there is always a point of diminishing returns. Where that point is, is up to you and your wallet. The DSP A1 had very good amps in it. Much better than whats found in most of todays AVR's. I believe the UPA-1's would be a big step up from what you now have. The XPA-1's will annihilate the amps in your AVR.
If I were in the market, and I could get it past my wife, no question - XPA-1's in a heartbeat.
Heck, If I could get 'em past my wife, I would be in the market.

Just to add my $0.02
Yes, you get more power. Which equals more volume, and control of your speakers for bass and across the freq range (esp if your spkr impedance dips over the range and is more difficult to drive).
Aside from power, its how the amp is made technically. Hifi amps can cost thousands of dollars but only output 80W.
The XPA1s are so good I use them with my Focal 1027 Beryllium speakers in my hifi only system. Very wide and deep soundstage. They seem to be very sensitive to my front end- the better my preamp and cd player the better the sound is.
If you can afford the space (and the heat) go for it, they are great value for money!

XPA-1s and never have to buy amps again ... until Emo sells 2,000 watt XPA-1s.

^ You'd be set for life dear Canadian brother from Vancouver! * Pssst, add a second sub too! It would also be a major Audio improvement. And if I may, look at pre/pros that have Audyssey MultEQ XT32 (or at least XT). Cheers, Bob (from across the Strait of Georgia)

Lord of the rings. Hello fellow Canadian! Hmm well Im thinking most of the bugs are out of the umc 1 and also for the price I don't think it can b beat As for 3 xpa 1s and 2 upa 1s hmmmm yes I've thought of that combo My reasons for all xpa1s... Cool factor ;D No need to upgrade amps again unless one amp dies I have full range speakers all around. Studio 100 cc350 studio 60s in rear Either purchase is gonna b expensive so my thought is if going in this deep might as well go all out

showtyme, i'm guessing that you can save tons in shipping by driving across the border for the pick-up. Savings might be equivalent to two ultra subs (good idea as suggested above). Just ensure that you got a pick up truck or a minivan. My son and I picked up 11 items during the july 4th sale in our SUV and just barely fit everything.

Nope tiny car and no time to do that.....
Hmmm as for two subs? Nice suggestion. Would it have to b another paradigm pw2200?

It wouldn't have to be the same sub, but I would definitely recommend that it be the same.

I would recommend the same type of sub or at least one that has the same performance range. Like speakers, subs have individual voices and when you have 2 dissimilar voices you can tell there's 2 instead on hearing only one.

That is my hope ;D I have never had the opportunity to go with separates till now Emotiva gives me the opportunity to do this. Yes it will still cost lots but not nearly as much as high end separates !!! Just have to wait to see what charges will be to get gear to my place
