Hello all,
Currently I have 2 UPA-1 amplifiers for my main speakers and had planned on adding a UPA-5 for the center and surrounds, making a 7.2 channel HT.
With the spooky sale passed and no UPA-5s in the current holiday sale...I am considering just going ahead with an XPA-5 for the center and surrounds, while keeping the monos on the mains.
What do you guys think? Is that a good idea/bad idea? I guess I am just debating on what to do and am looking for some input...

Sounds like a plan to me. ;D Without more specific information about what gear you have, the size and shape of your listening room, your listening habits, etc, it is not possible to say if there are better options available to you. However, with the route you have mentioned, you have just about any possibility covered.

Yeah, I am purposely being vague I suppose as I am not really "settled" on what speakers I will ultimately run. Right now I am in a fairly large room but I am only renting at the moment so that can (and will) change in the future. I suppose I am sort of trying to "future proof" my amplifier selection as I do not really want to have to upgrade again any time soon. `

You still thinking about the Aperion VGTs? I only have a few days in but they are impressing me with every song I play. Also I wanted to let you know that bass on the new speakers is a dream for me. I used to run a sub with the 6Ts but now i just turned off my sub and run the new speakers as large and I can't stop smiling. Boom Boom Pow by black eye peas......made enough bass to fill my room and the rest of my apartment. :-)

I want to try them anyway, there is no loss if I decide they aren't right for me. Glad to see you are enjoying the new grand towers. Would you say they have better bass than the 6T series? The 6T towers have better specs in that regard so I assumed they would have the deepest, strongest bass. What about the mids and highs vs. the 6Ts? I apologize for all of the questions but I am REALLY curious to know what these sound like. I know you say that you aren't a "technical writer" and aren't used to reviewing things, but to be honest, I am not at all concerned about any of that stuff man. I am relatively new to this hobby myself and I find "real user" reviews far more useful (even if they do not contain tech mumbo jumbo) than "pro" reviews. The reason being is because real users have an extended time with the gear, they have the opportunity to "grow" with their gear, learn the strengths and weaknesses of it, move it around the room, push it to its limits, relax with it, ect...really USE it you know. I like to rock Boom boom pow, Imma be, and missing you on my B&Ws. It's fun, I have them corner loaded so the bass is really bloated and not very accurate sounding for "real" music but on some Peas....yeah... ;D

With it you have two spare channels for height/width or Zone 2. If your speakers are 8 ohm, I would go with it. If your speakers are 4 ohm, then I would go with the XPA-5 on sale.

Hmmm...zone two...now I had not thought of that. Good idea. Now for "stupid question" time. If a receiver has a zone 2 output, how does that work? Are you just using the receiver as a pre-amp for that purpose? I apologize but I have never used a second zone on a receiver and I am not too familair with how it works. Does anyone care to explain, please.

A Zone 2 output allows you to provide a stereo feed to another room in your home or to a pair of outdoor speakers. Better AVR's have preamp outputs for this, so two extra channels would be handy for this purpose.

Well, I decided that I will not regret it if I order the bigger amp and I am not sure that I will really ever need the two additional channels by ordering a UPA-7, so I just spoke with Vincent and ordered up an XPA-5! Can't wait until it gets here. It will be interesting to compare the sound of this amp to my UPA-1s. I am thinking it will probably be almost impossible for me to be able to tell them apart...especially if it were a blind test. ;D
