Just wanted to sort out some confusion.
Is it necessary to use the XLR output for the XDA-1 to perform pre-out duties ? Or can this be achieved with the unbalanced RCA outputs as well ?
My understanding is that the balanced outputs would allow volume control (through the differential) while the unbalanced would simply be a line-level and would require a pre-amp... Or did I get it wrong?
Since I'm currently looking for a new preamp and a DAC as well, the XDA-1 looks very interesting right now but my amp (NAD 317) does not have XLR connections.

I guess volume control is not limited to XLR output only. Someone with great knowledge please rectify? I have pre-ordered XDA-1, intend to use as a preamp with RCA outputs, and this post really make me confused.

AFAIK, both RCA and XLR outputs will be active simultaneously. I'm sure "someone with great knowledge" will correct me if I've got this wrong.

I don't have "great knowledge" but this is the first I've heard that the volume control is for XLR only.

I highly doubt volume control will be limited to the XLR's. Both the XLR and the RCA stages will have volume control I'm sure!

The volume control is in the DAC chip, ahead of the output stage where it gets split into balanced+unbalanced, so it would have to apply to all the outputs.

What Mr Ben said.
Lonnie stated that the volume control is in the Dac chip therefore would work with both un and balanced
