Hello all, As you all (probably) know I ordered up an XPA-5 to take advantage of the savings during the current holiday sale. Well it arrived today and I have it hooked to my Rotel processor that does Dolby pro logic only. Anyway, I have done a tiny bit of preliminary listening so far, nothing extremely critical as of yet. I had to hook my B&Ws up "regular" instead of bi-wired like normal and I didn't feel like getting the tape measure out to insure they were placed exactly as they were prior to hooking up the new amp. I will get to that soon though... ;D First thoughts...well in comparing it to my UPA-1 mono block amps, I have to say that I am VERY pleased thus far. One thing I found particularly interesting was the seemingly endless amount of headroom this amp had when running in stereo mode. I kept turning it up and it kept getting louder, without stressing or breaking a sweat at all. In fact I could get it a good deal louder than my UPA-1s without feeling like it was stressing the amp at all. ;D In this regard, I have to admit, it beats my little mono blocks...it kind of saddens me to say that, (really) as I have always loved the UPA-1 amps but I did feel that I could find their limits...with the XPA-5 I don't think I really reached that point (yet anyway) while playing a stereo CD. Just to do it, and because I have it hooked up, I played CDs in pro logic mode to see how they sounded. I must admit that I kind of liked it... It's not musically accurate by any means but it did add a bit of a "fun factor" to listening. One thing I felt was quite striking was the amount of power available to my center and surround channels. I am used to my mains getting good power, but I have never heard such power on everything else. It was quite impressive to say the least. I cannot imagine any receiver being able to really push your speakers like an XPA-5 will. As far as sound characteristics go, I am still up in the air. At first I thought the XPA-5 sounded "fuller" and maybe a tad bit "richer" than the UPA-1s but when I left, then came back home and popped in some Norah (that I am very familiar with) I noticed that the classic Emo sonic signature I am used to is still there. I think sometimes swapping gear can have a bit of a mental effect initially. We think it sounds different, and so it does. I have not completely decided how I feel about this quite yet. Noise levels are just a hair higher on the XPA-5. When in stereo mode and using my UPA-1s I can pause a CD and turn the volume all the way up and hear NOTHING from my sitting position. In fact I had to get within inches of the tweeters to hear any audible noise. When doing this same test with the XPA-5 I did hear a tiny bit of noise in stereo mode, volume all the way up and CD on pause. In pro-logic mode there was so much noise it sounded as if I was in a "white noise blizzard" I do not think that is the fault of the XPA-5 though. I am blaming the noise on the Rotels processing, I just think if it was the amp then it would be noisy even in stereo mode...and its not. I will post more thoughts as I continue to listen and evaluate over the next several days. Thanks for reading. -Dave

I just picked up an XPA-5 got it last Thursday, looks great sounds great. I do notice that the LEDs are a little dim? Is that normal? Just wondering.

Thanks for reading guys. @ guines69: The LEDs on my XPA-5 do not seem to be as bright as the ones on my UPA-1s. This is normal and is nothing to be concerned about. Ok, I have had a bit of a rough day so I didn't really get any serious listening time in, but I had to pop in here and say that in the (very limited) listening I did today I am VERY, VERY impressed with the XPA-5. Once again I did some quick "blasting" just to try to push this amp as hard as I can. I was playing a stereo CD and running the Rotel in stereo mode, the mains are hooked to the two channels that are physically farthest apart on the amp...and all I can say is WOW!!! I was deliberately trying to find the limits of this amp and I cannot seem to be able to find them (using just two channels at a time) I am more afraid of popping my speakers than running out of clean dynamic power with this thing. ;D Sure, my UPA-1s can throw down some power but I just feel the XPA-5 does it with more "authority" and without running out of steam at ANY volume level. I just feel that in this area it bests the UPA-1s. Am I the only one who feels that way? Once again I must add that I still feel that this amp sounds different than my UPA-1 amps. I don't know why, but it just seems to sound a little different. If anyone knows an easy way to do an A/B test with amps, please let me know. I would like to put these to the test...and I am one of those guys who completely believes that all amps sound the same when ran in their linear ranges. That is why I feel so "conflicted" in thinking they sound different...I KNOW they shouldn't! Anyway, like I said, I have had a rather rough day and I am tired tonight. Hopefully tomorrow will be a nice easy day and I can come home, make supper, and chill in front of my new Emo amp.

Always luv to read about the XPA-5. ...Great multichannel amp that you can also use to Bi-amp your two front Mains and still have that other channel amp to power your front Middle speaker ("La caisse de son centrale", ou bien "L'enceinte acoustique de/du centre", ou bien "Le haut-parleur du milieu"). Thanks Dave.

Thanks Dave. You're welcome Bob. I plan on doing some serious listening as soon as possible and give a more detailed review. I will be doing sort of a "comparison" review with my UPA-1 monos as that is all I have to compare them to. I will use selected music and post full details of the tracks selected and my thoughts regarding the performance of the the amps. It may take a bit for me to get all of this done so please be patient with me . My plan is to literally take notes as I listen so that I can have some solid information to report back. Thanks again for taking the time to read my thoughts, feelings, and opinions all.

Good review. I've often wondered if I wanted a couple of UPA mono blocks for my front, and had read a few ideas that they could keep up with and XPA 5 (moving it to surround and B room) but I just wasn't convinced. Knowing how I play my music, and types of music. You've convinced me I would need to go up not back. I use it a lot for pure stereo.
As far as the "EMO signature sound" though I would like to think that what you are hearing is the music source's signature sound, and the XPA is completely neutral just pushing it through whatever voice coils you use! EFFORTLESSLY!
Someone move this post to the reviews thread so no one misses it. Thanks

Ok, gang! I have a bit of an update here in my review of the XPA-5. Tonight I watched my first movie with the XPA-5 doing the amplification duties for my Rotel (Dolby pro logic) processor. Well I must say that once again I am impressed with this amplifier. I had read elsewhere on this forum where a member had mentioned that when you have better amps, you do not need to crank the volume as high with movies to be able to hear everything clearly. I had thought, well that makes sense, but I cannot imagine that I would not be blasting as usual. Well sure enough, I actually had the Rotel set on a reasonable volume all night. I was so shocked by the fact I wasn't having to crank it, that I pointed it out to my GF...once I actually realized it! ;D To be quite honest, I was surprised at how much the XPA-5 improves the clarity of dialog in movies. I am the kind of guy that HAS to hear every syllable of dialog spoken and I do NOT want to strain to have to hear it all. With the Rotel/XPA-5 combo, all of the dialog and sound effects were easily heard and finely detailed. Nice, very nice. By the way, the movie we watched was "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" As far as the movie is concerned, it was a lot of fun to be honest. I actually said to my GF that this was the best stupid movie ever made. Lets make no mistakes here gentlemen, this film is far from fine cinema but it feels like you are watching a live action comic book/video game/cartoon all at the same time. It's pretty funny, and HIGHLY inventive to be sure. My biggest "gripes" with it are the paper thin plot, a hair too much padding, and too many tacked on endings...it could have been tightened up a bit to become a better film. All in all I would give it a 2.75 stars out of 4. You can add an extra .50 of a star if you are a big video game fan. I apologize for taking so long in posting my full thoughts about this amplifier but I wanted to have some real time to sit down and listen VERY closely to multiple music sources before I made my final judgment and I have been working all week. I have Sat. and Sun. off this week though, so I am going to try to get in some serious listening time this weekend if nothing else happens to pop up. Thanks for reading. -Dave

Poor kittens! ;D Thanks for reading and being patient with me guys. I have pretty much formed an opinion already, but things have popped up at work and home causing me to have less "down time" than I thought I was going to have over the past week or so. I REALLY would love to do a thorough review of this amp, providing an A/B comparison with the UPA-1s. Time just has not been on my side lately...honestly, aside form non-critical music listening and the one movie I have watched, I have not been able to get sat down for a solid length of time to give a detailed description of what I am hearing. Once again I apologize for the delayed review...I promise I will get something posted as soon as possible, I am just trying to make my review something that well is thought out, written as best as I can, and useful to those who have not yet had an opportunity to listen to this amp.

Pic of XPA-5 in my "rack" Please ignore my "rack", it is actually an old t.v. stand. It is the only thing I currently own that will safely support the weight of the XPA-5. This pic was taken a couple of days ago for the blu-ray forums...those guys are constantly asking for pics. ;D
