Forum Members,
I am considering purchasing one of these two units.
Yes, I know that they have different capabilities, but one of the core functions of both units appears to be the Preamp Function.
How does the quality of preamp function compare between these two units?
Thank you, ES

For analog stereo the USP-1 has better sound quality. What is your intended use, input sources, amps, speakers, etc.?

Thank you JimBailey
Use as preamp: General input controler for various analogue signals. Stereo output, w or wo a supwoofer. Stereo output to powered studio monitor speakers. Headphone output nice to have.
If there is a DAC in the unit, then I may also use as a digital signal converter and router, as above.
Yours, ES

Yours, ES The USP-1 is strictly a 2-channel stereo analog pre-amp; and, as such does not have a DAC. This unit is a pure, world class stereo pre-amp. Its sound quality easily bests any HT processor I have ever listened to. If you happen to have any digital source components that you are wanting to output as 2-channel analog, then you would need an external DAC, like the XDA-1, to convert the digital signal to analog. For a quality 2-channel audio system to handle all of your analog and digital components, the XDA-1 could be combined with either of the Emotiva pre-amps, the USP-1 and the soon to be released XSP-1. The XSP-1 offers a fully balanced signal path.

One thing you should be aware of is that the USP-1 does not fully mute the stereo preamp outputs when using the headphone jack. With an external amp, you can just turn the amp off to kill sound to the speakers when using headphones. This may be more of an inconvenience with powered speakers. On a positive note, the sound quality of the USP-1 is first rate.
