I was wondering whats the best route to hook up my stuff. I have a usp-1 pre xpa-2 amp and erc-1. I'm getting the xda-1. What order do I install the xda? Do I have it hooked up after erc then xda to usp?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ERC-1 digital out, into the XDA-1, and from there RCA-cables into the USP-1. And then you use two additional RCA-cables into your XPA-2. Then plug in your speakers.

Or for best possible sound quality: ERC-1 digital out -> XDA-1 -> balanced cable -> XPA-2 Volume regulation is built in XDA-1, but you have to switch the amp to balanced manually. Inconvinient, but the best sounding option as per Lonnie. (Until XSP-1 is on market )

so ERC-1 digital out requires an optical cable?

so ERC-1 digital out requires an optical cable? Optical or coax, it has both outputs

so what if I connected the ERC-1 to the XDA-1 with coax?

so what if I connected the ERC-1 to the XDA-1 with coax? Either coax or digital it doesn't matter - it is the same information being sent to the XDA-1 - although some will have a preference of coax over optical and vice-versa, personally I don't have a preference.

Can i connect the xda-1 using xlr balanced cable to xpa-1 skip umc-1 so when listening to 2 ch just switch the back of xpa-1 to balanced. When watching HT switch back to unbalaced & thru the umc-1?

Yes, you could hook it direct to the XPA-1 and switch sources by using the Bal/UnBal switch on the back of the amp, but it is not a wise thing to do. The slider switch is intended to be used rarely, when first installing it or when changing pre/pro connections. The switch is NOT designed to be used as you are contemplating. It will fail rather quickly if used on a daily basis to switch input sources. Emotiva has confirmed this on another thread. DO NOT DO IT!

Not trying to hi-jack but I didn't want to start a new thread on "how to hook up".... I'm surprised nobody has responded "try craigslist personals" or "e-harmony" yet. Anyway, i want to bypass my usp and go direct into two upa-1's, but I would really like to use a sub in my 2 channel set up. I am contemplating using FMOD active crossover simulators in line with the unbalanced outputs to the high pass amps and then utilize the balanced output to the sub where I can use the low pass crossover integral with the sub. Two questions really: 1) Anybody used or had experience with FMOD filters good or bad 2) Any problem utilizing the balanced and unbalanced outputs on the xda-1 simultaneously? www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=266-272

I have read several posts about that being the way to hook it up, and it is the way I planned to hook it up. There's no point to go from the ERC to XDA to my Onkyo receiver. That's just a waste of a $300 DAC. I'm not going to get a USP because it's output is inferior to the XDA, and the whole issue with the HT Bypass, not really being a true bypass. The XSP doesn't exist yet, and no word on when it will, and even when it does I'm not sure I can swing another $800. I won't be switching it daily, but probably several times a week. So what is Emo's estimated MTBF on that switch, and will they warranty it if/when it breaks?

Thanks murphman. I definitely need to come up with something for a high pass. I get carried away with the volume sometimes when the source is clean and I don't want to send anything much under 80 or so hz to my MTM's to help protect me from myself. I'll give those FMOD's a try.
After going through the effort of an external DAC with discrete outputs direct to mono-block amps, I should probably just build some nice full range floor standers so I don't have to worry about it. ;D

Call me crazy but when I get my XDA-1 I'm going to use my XDA-1 as my pre/pro an get rid of my surround sound and run solely on 2 channel for everything. At least until I get an XMC.
