I can verify that SCAD via HDMI on the Oppo does limit the stream to 88.2kHz as well.

Have you tried connecting with Toslink cable?

No. My Oppo manual states that SACD's will not work through the coax or optical out based on copyright policy.

Indeed the Oppo 83 can play SACD via HDMI. I would think that the Monoprice switcher indeed handshakes the HDMI protocol, so it might work. I see there's a 30-day return policy.

I am afraid that the monoprice HDMI switch will not help you with the SACD issue. You will be able to send the DSD signal across the HDMI switch but it will not help you because the digital outputs from the switch will only be stereo PCM and you cannot send DSD via digital outputs. The switch could prove useful for those who have receivers without HDMI capability to playback other audio formats but not for DSD -- you would be violating Sony's copyright. The HDMI switch hold potential for a lot of people as long as they don't need DSD (SACD) compatibility.

Since I now have the SACD player in the form of the Oppo, I worked my way through the SACD.net list. I selected an affordable foursome that I ordered via Amazon.de. But those prices! I say 5x more than a CD on average. And there are only about 500 Pop/Rock albums and about 1,000 Jazz albums. Link: www.sa-cd.net/titles

I've always been suspicious of SACD (due to a general mistrust of Sony), so I've always bought DVD-Audio when I had a choice. That choice was re-affirmed once I learned about the inability of SACD to send high resolution digital audio over anything but HDMI. Check out AIX Records ( www.aixrecords.com/) if you haven't already. They produce high resolution multichannel DVD-Audio (and now a few Blu-ray) studio recordings, including video of the session. The discs generally include FOUR mixes (5.1 MLP Stage, 5.1 MLP Audience, PCM Stereo, and 5.1 Dolby Digital). Since we're talking two channel here, the PCM Stereo Mix is 24/96 and will play on any DVD player (even if you can't decode DVD-Audio). They are having a "buy one get one free" holiday sale now if you spend $100. You can't beat that deal for high-rez audio for your XDA-1 ;-)

Hmm...anyone want to buy a well preserved Oppo BDP 83 ? if I can't use my Oppo to my XDA not sure I hear enough additional detail vs ripping to the highest quality I can to my MacBook Pro and going that route for now.

I just posted this link in another thread , but it looks to be useful here . The oppo will only send SACD over HDMI , and you need a Decoder to send it to the DAC . I bought the Monoprice unit , and save your money !! It works pulling audio , But I have to reset the unit at least once a day . Get the Atlona . Anyway .. Long read , but very informative. www.audiocircle.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=l3c1crnk51t1qo0l5q7m0kk9lnfe1ua1&topic=82217.0

I am afraid that the monoprice HDMI switch will not help you with the SACD issue. Not true in this case: "I didn't have much time but I tested the Monoprice unit. The power supply from the Monoprice unit worked on the Port-ta unit. I plugged the Monoprice unit in and the remote from the Port-ta unit worked. I put in an SACD and the DAC locked on the 88.2kHz signal. I put in a 192kHz DVD-A and the DAC also locked on the signal. While I spent less than 3 minutes, I'd have to conclude they are the same unit."To the guest poster above, try one of these to reboot the device daily for $4: www.amazon.com/Intermatic-Appliance-Security-TN111C-Settings/dp/B00002N5FI/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1292088391&sr=1-2
