The XDA says Digital Preamplifier so does this mean that I can run the XDA>UPA-5 for 2 channel listening? Would I need a stereo preamp also?
I am gonna get a Marantz 5005 or 6005 for my HT needs, where would the XDA fit into the system. Here is what I have
PS3, Marantz CD5001, cable box, (Marantz reciever) UPA-5

I doubt you would benefit much from the XDA-1 in this case, where only the CD5001 would be it's source.
Options:
1/ Plug the XDA-1 into the AVR.
2/ You might as well use the digital out from the CD5001 into the AVR and use no XDA-1
3/ Do as you say and use the USP-1 pre-amp between the AVR and the UPA-5 via the HT-bypass for the surorund duties. The XDA-1 outputs to the USP-1 for CD playback. XSP-1 would be the superior solution over the USP-1
I think option 1 and 2 will sound very much the same.
If you have the UPA-5, why not get the UMC-1 first and try that with the digital output from the CD5001. Why buy a $800/1,000 reciever if you can try separates for less money? Send it back if you don't like it.

If you plan to use it like that then I would recommend it... If you plan to run it to a HT receiver, then I'd suggest saving your money and just connecting the CD player to the receiver...

Thanks! I was wanting to run the XDA straight to the amp with my laptop usb as source. I have 700gb of wav. files and a few HRx files. This would be for 2 channel only. Then if it didn't sound better than the CDP, I would move the XDA to my Full tower rig for my Audioengine A5's.
You can pick up a Marantz 5005 refurb for $550-600 and I bet it would perform better in HT than the UMC-1 since many people are having problems with the UMC-1 and the Marantz has more features and Audyssey. I was thinking about the UMC but after reading a few post, I might wait for the UMC-2 and get the 5005 to hold me over for the next 2 years.
