Please Emotiva! I would be willing to pay for a Firmware update if you could please please please add the Frequency/BitRate to the display of the XDA...I think it should default to the Freq/BitRate and then show the volume whenever the volume is changed....
Lonnie....Is it possible for this unit to show this info on the display??

I can't help but reflect on the UMC....I think it is obvious for customers to expect that bug fixes be resolved with no charge to the customer....but what about features....
I have seen the comments on the forum about the XDA's sensitivity with the volume control....I have also seen people's expressed frustrations with the dimmer function with the DAC....and I have myself now voiced my opinion on the need for the Freq/BitRate to display on the unit....What if?? If Emotiva opened the USB port on the DAC to allow for user upgrades to the firmware and they added/tweaked the above features....and on Friday they released it to there web page with a $20 fee for the firmware upgrade...I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GET OUT MY VISA FAST ENOUGH!! and IF I CALLED EMOTIVA ABOUT THE $20 UPGRADE IT WOULD BE TO SAY, THANKS!!
I've seen so many people nickel and dime Emotiva about different things with the UMC...and I'm sure other products...Firmware upgrades cost the company money....and when these upgrades are a direct result of customer request for enhanced features...Why can't we pay up?? What other company listens? I was so disappointed in the Emotiva customer base when I heard people were complaining after they sent there UMC's back that they didn't get the $100 Emobucks....Really??
I will gladly pay for a firmware update that offers me more features to an already great product.
Anyone?

I agree with paying for firmware updates, apart from the volume issue... That is a production/design problem that needs to be fixed and not a user requested new feature...

There's no way I'd pay $20 just to see the bitrate.

I'd pay for this too.

I don't think it's realistic, but let's face it, Emotiva is way more adaptive to it's customer base than the other brands. We can't have everything and pay 25% of what the others charge.

There's no way I'd pay $20 just to see the bitrate. And thus the beauty of paying for firmware features....if you don't want it...then don't pay for it....

This perfectly helps my position..Thank you!! So many people I have seen on these forums expect just that....Give us a product at 25% what others companies normally charge...and then when we request features...give'em to us for free... Through my approach...since Emotiva is giving us a great product at such a low cost...how can we expect to receive firmware updates at no cost...We know it's costing the company money...So we can pay for the effort... How many people have paid for a ridiculously expensive upgrade to there GPS unit?? P.S. Bug fixes...and features are different....I realize we still have to be supported...

Hi together,
the USB port on the XDA-1 is an audio interface only. There´s no way to modify the firmware via the USB port. I opened the XDA yesterday and there´s a unused connector socket at the front plate PCB. Maybe thats a possibility to change the firmware. But most likely you´d have to send it in.
Besides that its not said, that it´s (hardware) technical possible to show the input bitrate. But please: Volume setting is nearly unusable, please set the registers in a logarithmic manner.

I think it's horrible idea. We shouldn't have to pay for fixes to devices. Emotiva makes plenty of money, and has a great reputation. I love my ERC-1 and XDA-1.
But charging for firmware fixes just begs for inserting initial bugs in the hardware to be fixed later for a fee. Greed always wins if you let it. In the end we would think we're getting a great deal but the nickle and diming would add up to not so much a great deal anymore.
Horrible idea.

In the end we would think we're getting a great deal but the nickle and diming would add up to not so much a great deal anymore. Horrible idea. Every re-write of a firmware has the potential for creating more problems... This amplifies the complexity of any firmware change...all manufacturers go through this when they write new software...This is nothing new and will continue to be...Your idea of a manufacturer inserting bugs in the beginning release...interesting thought process...I don't think that Emotiva has such an evil side... As stated above...Were talking about the value to a customer for Emotiva to release firmware's that "unlock" new features...this is actually a normal practice in other markets...You pay for there hard work...and you get something in return...The fact I want the BitRate to show on the display doesn't mean that everyone will want this feature...but there is a cost with making it happen...pay for it - you get it.... Again...If Emotiva released a new firmware to fix bugs for the UMC...and then once a year released a new firmware that added some features...but charged $50...I would gladly pay the price and bring my UMC to the next level...What if that firmware added Pandora radio?? Does that kind of feature change not deserve a payment ?? If you think that this idea sounds like a rip-off...check your cellphone bill a little more closely...or better yet...How much did that new iPhone really cost you...(P.S. That wasn't directed to anyone in particular, just sayin'...compare what we waste money on...and then turn around and *bleep* about paying to people who really earned it..)

Thanks for the info...I realize that the USB port was intended for delivering musical bits...but what prevents it from also communicating with the board for other reasons...the same port on my computer can load those same musical bits on my ipod...and it also can send a file to my printer...The iPhone was rooted in like a week...right ;D ALL EMOTIVA PRODUCTS FROM THIS DAY FORWARD SHOULD BE CAPABLE OF USER UPGRADEABLE FIRMWARE!!! But to continue with the discussion...What if we had to ship it to Emotiva at our own cost and then divvy out our $20 to have the lab re-flash the board.. Is it still worth some new features...and does Emotiva deserve it...

Its a dumb device. I would be surprised if it were possible to add these features through a simple firmware flash.
My $20 would go towards a proprietary driver to unleash this beast.

Although I completely understand where you are coming from with the idea to compensate for additional features (and some of the ones mentioned I would like to see) , I believe in practice this would cause quite a stir and some serious back-lash. Especially if there were bugs popping up in the "upgrades". If you think people like to complain about free firmware updates...wait 'till they are dropping $20 bucks a pop for them...Just my 2 cents...

Hi All,
I'm a newbie to the lounge. Here is my opinion on paying for updates in general: Bug fixes hardware or software should be free to the user. New features should cost the user. There is a fine line when it comes to quality vs time-to-market. Given Emotiva's business model I would expect their QA/QC budget to be such that it provides the resources for thorough testing. Thereby reducing the number of bugs that make it out the door. From what I've seen in the posts throughout the lounge they are doing quite well. Any new product will have it's share of bugs. I believe the user should not have to pay to be the "beta" tester.
the thoughts of a raving lunatic. :-)

I say making people pay for updates is just not the American way. Most airlines are charging people for their luggage which is ridiculous.

Not displaying the incoming bitrate is a deficiency in the design, clearly if there was customer input this would have been a reality, I wouldn't pay for it to be a option, it should have been in there day one, just like all channel stereo in the umc should have been.

Some wanted a headphone jack, some wanted a bitrate display, some wanted a different DAC chip. This thread shows that some want to have custom tailored firmware. I suppose you can't please everybody, but how about a volume function that works as described(.5 decibel increments) on the XDA product page?
