Can anybody tell me if there is a difference in sq when playing only 16/44 files ripped lossless to win. xp hdd.I'm running a stereolink 1300 usb dac to Onkyo 905 avr. I am very happy with the improvement this dac made to my set up.I have had this set up for several years now and figured there must be something better by now.XDA-1 looks to be so.Alot of people on the forums seem to prefer toslink like its the only way to go, I understand this for hi- res files. For me to use toslink I would need to spend 150 or so for m2 hiface. My main question is: is there a tech. difference between the to conections in regards to 16/44 files only?is the snr or dynamic range background noise etc. different?

I havebtried both and noticed a slight difference. One is not better than the other though. I found the USB to have a touch better separation and optical to have a more cohesive sound. It is super tough to tell. it is going to be listener specific where some may hear a difference and others don't. For your situation and spending money to make your DAC be comparable with optical... I would save your money.

This is hard to say which, simply because there are many, many different USB chips being used. There can be a great deal of variance in SQ from chip to chip being used. The SQ for digital feeds is far more consistant. If you have a choice, try both and see if you detect any differences. Use the one you like better.
