Hi, All:
I'm on the waiting list for the XDA-1 and I'm trying to arrange a few system control details before it arrives.
I have a new laptop w/ a fast dual-core and 8gb of ram. I'm using it right now into an HRT Music Streamer II+ with excellent results. I am going to be replacing this current dac and my USP-1 analog preamp w/XDA-1, as all my sources are digital.
I'd like to be able to sit the laptop on my equipment rack about 15 feet away and control my music wirelessly through J River MC15 with some type of device like a tablet computer, i-pad, etc. This way I'll be able to have just a small control surface touchpad at the listening seat to access JRMC15 and control volume. That is the only thing I need the control pad/interface to do. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Up until now I would just sit the laptop by my listening chair and run a 15 foot USB cable over to the HRT dac. Very cumbersone, with a WAF of ZERO. Tia for any help. Jeff.

Just curious what phone to you have? A lot of smartphones have the ability to control media centers on a network computer using wifi.

I do something very similar to what you want on my system using my iPad.
The iPad has a free app called “Remote” that will take complete control of iTunes that is running on my media PC. You can do anything that you would normally do directly with iTunes.
There is another app for the iPad (not free) that allows you to take over a complete remote desktop on the PC. I use this when I am running J River and playing FLAC files.
A third app “L5” is a universal remote app for the iPad, $40 with dongle. All my remotes are programmed into this.
The above apps give me pretty good control of my system.
The final app I’m waiting for is the Onkyo receiver app that is due out the end of the month. With it I will be able to control my 808 while not being in IR line of sight!

This sounds a lot like what I need for my situation. What's the name of the app and how much$$$. I'll certainly look into it for sure! Thanks!

On Android, there's a simple, free app called Gmote that gives you Play/Pause/Stop/Back/Forward and Volume buttons that should work with whatever program you're using (Foobar, J River, Windows Media Player, etc).
Even cooler is that it also gives you a keyboard & touchpad, so you can manually click things (if you're close enough to see the screen). It also lets you browse your computer's media and stream it to the phone, but obviously that's not going to be very hi fi.

Look it up in iTunes Store - $15 I think?

substrate, J River actually has a built in interface for use with a iPod/iPhone, iPad, tablet, netbook, etc. I'm sure something doesn't exist for a Blackberry at this point. I would recommend getting an inexpensive android tablet, which can be had for 100 bucks for a small one, or get something like the Archos 7. Check the forums here for the lowest prices by searching for "tablet". Many users comment on the quality of the devices and post links to reviews. slickdeals.net/As soon as I'm getting my T-mobile G2 next week, I'll be trying to implement a similar setup. I now use a standard wireless keyboard and mouse to control my PC with J River MC 15, which is a pain and ugly. If you don't beat me to it, I'll let you know how the Android app is for controlling the software. I heard it's pretty versatile. Another alternative is to use an iPhone or Android app to control the mouse on the screen. I have tried the Logitech Touch app (or something like that) which was free and does a very good job of navigating my PC from the couch, essentially using the touch screen of the iPod as a mouse tracking pad. I would definitely recommend against using a media center remote for general PC use, but it does work great for J River. I had my cheap remote programmed for J River and it was fast and easy to use for Theater View, but not so much for the other views in J River. It is probably the cheapest alternative, but not the most versatile.

Okay, I got my new HTC Desire Droid today and it interfaces great w/MC15 as far as being able to load songs from my MC15 library into the Desire with album art, etc.
What I would like to do is have MC15 displayed on my HTC so I can use it while sitting on the couch. I have a standard MC remote that I can control MC15 with from across the room, but it's obviously hard to see the album art that far away. Yes, I can run the hdmi out from my laptop to my Samsung 50" plasma, but I'd rather not do that. I want MC 15 to show up on my HTC, in miniature, as if I had a tiny laptop with me on the couch.
Is there a way to do this yet? I basically upgraded my BB Tour 9630 so I could use the droid to control MC15. I've tried Gmote, but can't get it to access my computer, even after allowing it firewall access, etc. Even at that, it still seems that Gmote would only control play/pause functions, etc- not display album art and such. Please forgive my ignorance, I'm very new to this aspect of controlling MC15... TIA!

;D Made one small mistake while configuring; had a period where I should've had a colon.
Gmote is very handy once you get it set up. As I have it now, I can access my MC15 music library and control it with the HTC Desire from the couch. The laptop with MC15 and the music library sits over on the equipment rack, and there are no wires running across the floor. Good stuff!
