I was wondering if anyone here tried connecting a PS3 and/or XBOX360 to the XDA-1 ?? Does it work, do you need to configure anything on the consoles ? What happens with multichannel game sound on the XDA-1 ??
I'm looking for a 2 channel set, but like to connect these 2 consoles (and a pc) aswell.
Emotiva support suggested to force output on the consoles to PCM (okay, logical), but can you force output to 2 channel ??
Thx...
(PS. I only use the consoles for gaming, no movies, no music)

My honest opinion is that if your only using the system for games, there isn't really a need for a DAC. It is going to be better suited for 2 channel music. I'm not a gamer so I don't really know the quality of sound on a game, but is it really designed to be high quality? If the game is designed to be multichannel and you are forcing it to be 2 channel you might be actually doing yourself a disservice and downgrading your experience.

i personally think xda-1 excellently fits such purpose. xda-1 can give such devices(ps3, wii, xbox, pc's and other audio/video (2-channel) products, etc...) that have optical/coaxial outputs to sound clean and robust. of course, it depends on your amp and speakers down the chain also...

I want a 2-channel set near my desk, so I'm thinking of getting a UPA-2 + XDA-1. I then can connect my cd-player and pc to the XDA-1. Since I use my monitor for gaming too, it would be handy if I can connect the consoles aswell. 2-channel is enough for me for gaming.
It's either UPA-2 + XDA-1 or a receiver (I prefer the first solution).

I have actualy thought about doing this as well. I think this would be a great way to enjoy great sound with both your music and games. The down side is lack of bass managment.

Unless you only have a 2 channel setup for your video game systems then the XDA-1 isn't going to do you any good unless your going to listen to music through your game consoles. Almost all PS3 and Xbox 360 games have surround sound so with all that going on in your games your not even going to notice a change in quality. I listen to all of my music from my HTPC and have a pretty decent sound card in it with a 24/192 DAC and it sounds pretty damn good.

I don't have space for a surround setup, nor do I want one at my desk. I also play with headphones on to not bother my girlfriend (my desk is in the livingroom), so that's stereo aswell.
I know I won't be getting surround sound, but that's not a problem for me.
All I like to know if the PS3 and the XBOX360 will output 2 channel via optical to the XDA-1 and if someone tried this.

Hi,
I am using the XDA-1 with both my PS3 and XBOX 360 as like you, I have by choice only a stereo set-up. It works well and you just have to set both system to downmix to stereo.
Actually, until now, I was using the PS3 to play my music and watch my bluray. I am just currently changing to an Oppo bdp-93 to have a slightly better PQ and also be able to play natively a wider range of file (flac, mkv...).
In my opinion, for a strictly 2 channel set-up with either the PS3 or the XBOX 360 the XDA-1 is a good pick especially regarding its price.

This is very intersting. In my setup, I will be running HDMI from the PS3 to my reciever for movies and games, Id like to use the optical from the PS3 directly to the XDA-1 and then go XLR from the XDA-1 to my XPA-3 amp. My intention is to mimic the settup at RMAC this year, Id listed to cd's and switch my amp over to XLR input to take my reciever out of the loop. My question is when using SACD, most of mine are not multichannel mixes, optical does support 2ch in full resolution, while HDMI would be required if you wanted full multi channel resolution. If I'm wrong on this let me know. I'm excited to see how much better most of my digital stuff sounds.

Yes, I had to go into system settings on the XBOX and change the audio to Dolby Stereo ( IIRC) vs Dolby Digital.
