Hi,
I am thinking of purchasing a low output moving coil for my Scout turntable which I use with my USP-1. I am thinking of getting the new model of the Dynavector 20X2 Low Output (0.3mv).
I currently use a Benz Glider Medium Output (0.9mv) and the USP-1 has plenty of gain. I was wondering if I would be happy with the gain when I use a cartridge of only 0.3mv? I would prefer not too have to get into a step up transformer, etc.
I did a quick scan again of the USP-1 manual but I couldn't find the gain figures for the Moving Coil setting of the phono section?
Any experience or thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks.

The USP-1 phono stage gain is 40db for MM and 60db for MC type carts.
I can't comment on how well a low output cartridge will work but hopefully those gain figures will help you.

I ran a Denon DL-103R with a rated .25mV output on my Clearaudio Emotion. While I needed to bump the volume control up a bit over the previous MM cartridge it wasn't a problem fo me.
I never noticed any difference in the overall noise level even at the slightly higher volume setting.
Go for it.

I'm running a low output Denon 103 into my USP-1. There are times when I have wished for a little more oomph out of the phono section of the USP with this cartridge - but really its pretty good. It does the job or serves as a good stop-gap while you save for a great stand-alone phono stage to go with your new cart. I agree with previous poster that the phono section remains quiet even on the MC setting.
I've thought a lot about buying that Dynavector cart - if you do, post what you think here or email me - I'd like your thoughts on the cart and its synergy with the USP.
