I am going with 22 speakers is too many. I honestly think eleven is probably a little overkill but allows enough channel separation that you can be enveloped with sound from all angles. However I do have to say that the simple mentioning of a 22 speaker setup being DEMO'd in Las Vegas does sound pretty intriguing. I think 7.1 is all my Fiance can handle right now....just wait until my package arrives later this week with my 4 new Polk TSI-a3's for my surrounds. Its going to be interesting.....

I hooked up a 7.1 system...I went back to 5.1. I didn't hear anymore of a 'seamless' sound with 4 rear speakers instead of 2.
I do like the idea of more front speakers, IE, I wish the center was equally split L/C/R, and then you had 'front wides' that did front surround effects. Most peoples L/R out spec their centers, so why not have them doing more duty during 'standard' modes. I think I'll make a spec for that, Dolby tjf or something.
I had 'front presence' on my Yamaha, so a 9.1 system, I went back to 5.1. You'd be way better off taking the money that is spent on the extra speakers, wire, receivers etc and buying better 5.1 speakers. My 2 cents...

I too went back to 5.1 from 7.1. I was running front wides. It did widen the soundstage for multi channel music listening. But I could not tell much difference for home theater. I still listen to music in mostly 2 channel. If I had a different room where the additional speakers made a difference, I would run them. Considering I've been using the same room for 19 years and no immediate plans to change or move, I'll be running 5.1 fro the foreseeable future.

I was reading this as more of a how many speakers you should own rather than use at any one time for the same source. I have about 6 pairs that I use from time to time in the same space depending on what amps I using, and what source material I am listening to. My wife says I have too many but many of them cost me nothing and some are quite collectable or they just sound too good to get rid of....I hate to sell of gear

I'm at Nine with a Onk 5507 and a bundle of Emo Amps (staggered triggers of course). Completely ridiculous but what the heck.
Can't remember if i said ridiculous or not...

In my room which has an opening at the rear to another room the same size, the back surrounds help fill in the gap, otherwise the rear sounds too open.
I think a lot depends on the size/shape of the room with more speakers working better in bigger rooms.

The day they start actually mixing movies for more than 6 (or 8) channels, then I'll consider expanding beyond my 7.1 system. Otherwise it's all technical/psychoacoustical digital DSP manipulation.

I'd say the sky is the limit! Bob adds one new speaker for each new Blu-Ray title he gets...

I'd say the sky is the limit! Bob adds one new speaker for each new Blu-Ray title he gets... I've got several pairs of speakers lying around. I even have an amp, I could do 7.1 but don't want cables draped through my dining room and kitchen. The space is very open with the area I have for watching, listening, computing in the living room. The dining room is directly behind me with only an arch separating it from the living room. The kitchen is defined by a peninsula/breakfast bar between the kitchen and dining room.

I'd say the sky is the limit! Bob adds one new speaker for each new Blu-Ray title he gets... That's about it! ;D ___________________ * There are actually thirteen (13) Satellite speakers right now in my main setup (all properly positioned), plus two (2) Subwoofers. But this is more for experimental use. In actuality only seven (7) Satellite speakers are running together right now (and of course the two Subs). But next will be ACTUAL eleven (11) Satellite speakers running all together (plus my two Subs)! ___________________ Remember Audyssey DSX with Front Width & Height channels? Well fellows, it is a secret sauce on how those channels are exactly derived! But Bob is working slowly but surely on deciphering it! *** And so far, I believe that some sound effects that are/were included in the Center channel, are going to the Front Width & Height channels! ...Like rain for just one example! - And surround information in relation with the front information... ...In a Horizontal plane (Width) as well a Vertical one (Height). ...And a mix of both! Chris Kyriakakis, professor and Audyssey founder, works very closely with film audio soundtrack mixers, and he knows how to take the several audio stems from some channels and redirect them to where they should be (belong to)! He uses some algorithmics and the power of DSP chips with high res compressed data (to save space and computational power), to substract those audio stems and to reinvest them in his DSX channels! With a data base of intelligent deductions from where sounds should emanate from (emerge in real life), and that are pre-programmed into a digital encryptor (just like in Movie audio soundtracks in a professional digital mixing EQ/Recording console); he can create an algorithm inscribed in one of the DSP decoder chips in our electronic products equipped with Audyssey DSX and voila! Audyssey DSX analyses all the channels' information, including the three front ones and the four surround ones (perhaps two); and then all that info goes to the base center of the DSX info brain center, to finally being redistributed to their proper places in real space! ...And all done in the Time domain! ===> In the very near future I will be doing extensive experiments to discover more about it! ...And I will share those discoveries with you ALL, including Chris himself! I just luv my hobby! ...With an enthusiastic passion! Always have! ...All about Acoustics! ...Sound Emanation & Dispersion! ...In Real Time & Space!...And of course Room's own Frequency Response from across the Full Audio Spectrum!Bob ~ I'd luv to experiment with TRINNOV Optimizer as well! ...For another Dimension!... 3D Spatial Remap!

L/C/R, S1 S2, LR/RR=Seven speakers, 10 amplifier channels. But to each their own.

Ambiophonics now works well with 2 front (close together) and two rear (also close together) speakers. Ambio4U (same people as miniDSP) have come out with a unit and closely mounted speakers in front provides a 180 degree soundstage and with two of their units 360 degree and that's with four speakers! I'm certain that much that Dolby does infringes on the ambiophonic patents but they are so disorganized they never did anything about it. Its been around for decades, at least since the early '80s.

Part 3 Bob, I love this hobby too. It is so interesting and brings so much beauty into life through music and perhaps movies. I tried doing hooking, knitting, photography (my first love), and this brings more satisfaction and it is uplifting when it seems nothing can be. I'm pretty fed up with the pain from the dental surgery last week. No vicodan left and I don't want to go back to the dentists, the trauma from last week is too fresh. But tomorrow I'm going to call and request some more vicodan. I need to find a cheap online photo storage site that accommodates large files (raw from Sony full frame). Then I could post some pictures of the speakers, and subs.

For different types of music but using the same amp since I am not wealthy enough to afford to have a separate tube amp. But speakers, I love speakers, I love speakers that do what I put them together to do, and having selectable fronts would be fun.

I has a pair of Wharfdale's for classical sitting on a pair of "Jensens" that I used for rock. That was 786,000 years ago :-)

Then I could post some pictures of the speakers, and subs. Theresa, what do you mean by 'hooking', or did you meant 'cooking'? EDIT: I just looked at the definition of 'hooking' (I had to google it as it is not in my dictionary); it is related to computers! Sorry Theresa, my French origin get me into trouble sometimes without my consent. I thought it would be best that I explained to you, so you can understand why sometimes people misinterpret my thinking. * It is a language barrier that get me banned in the past for the wrong reasons! People see something that I didn't know the meaning of a simple word! I take this opportunity to explain, but usually there is no communication given to me so we can understand what's happening. And hatred is created out of NOTHING! This is a major problem with this world; a HUGE lack of talking the same language! I can speak English, but not 100%; perhaps 97.89% (not good enough because just one word can make all the difference between love and war)! When I realized some of those language errors, it is usually too late! People already judge without the full understanding! It is a COMMUNICATION issue, a simple language barrier that sometimes get everyone confused! Anyway, instead of deleting this post, I know it is better that I explain my ignorance of one simple word. Now I know what it means! I feel down, real down, I miss something, and my heart hurts and I feel for all the misunderstanding in this world! Because I am sure that it is as major problem! I'll go back to school now and learn my English grammary.
