Anybody done a head to head between XDA-1 and OPPO 95 yet? For 2 channel music, of course.

Huh? One is a DAC, the other is a universal player. I'm not sure how you would compare these...

I've directly compared the Oppo BDP-83SE NuForce Edition vs. the XDA-1, both running directly into Parasound JC-1 amps. In brief, the Oppo has slightly more resolution, clarity, and life-likeness in the mid-range and high-end. But the XDA-1 has more control and definition in the bass. I think this may be due to a more robust analog section in the XDA-1, even though the NuForce edition beefs up the Oppo's analog section somewhat. Usually, the Oppo would go into a preamp, because its volume control trims bits at any setting less than 80. But even at 65, the Oppo provides a more realistic and involving presentation. I would expect that the Oppo BDP-95 will be better still. But at $299 (or $349 now), the XDA-1 is quite impressive. It is hard to beat the ESS DACs used in the Oppo, but the analog output section also counts for quite a bit of total sound quality.

If you haven't seen it yet, you might want to check out the "Secrets" website where they are doing a detailed two-part evaluation of both the BDP93 and 95 in the current edition. This first part is the audio-only performance of both players while the forthcoming second part will be a video only review. The reviewer loved both players, however, when it came to specifically analog performance tied in to both listening tests and scope measurements, to say he was impressed with the "95" is probably the understatement of the year.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE These questions:
How does X compare to Y and Z? Oh and by the way Y and Z aren't for sale to the general public.
Um... yes?

Both products are out, (there is already an owners thread at AVS for the Oppo 95 www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1311806 & I received an XDA-1 when it was first released) My question could have been more specific. Let me try this: Has anyone done a head to head comparison in terms of the XDA-1'a DAC performance and the Oppo 95's DAC performance for 2 channel music? I'm trying to decide if I should try an Oppo 95 or not. Thanks

I'm so happy that lancity loves these questions and answers which attempt to be helpful as possible. Consider it your Valentine from me. As Casey01 indicated, "Secrets" does have a very complete audio review of the BDP-93, BDP-93 NuForce, and BDP-95. The BDP-95's measured performance is outstanding. Since it uses the higher performance ESS 9018 Sabre chip, compared to the ESS 9016 Sabre chip in my Oppo BDP-83NuForce, and a greatly improved analog output section, I thought my comparison might prove helpful, if not exactly the direct comparison that ronjr requested.

I'd be very surprised if the XDA was better than the Oppo. The reviews on the -95 have been amazing and while the XDA is getting good reviews too, the Oppo is a $1000 "do everything well, very well" player.
Just my opinion as I haven't heard either one yet. My XDA is coming later today.
