I think it's just fun! ...Guess which one is at the #1 spot? HINT: Few members here own that BD player. And which I recommended too. And most of you only paid less than 140 squids for it! - Plays SACDs as well! ...And with Pure DSD stream at 176.4 Khz/24-Bit from its HDMI out!

Obsolete already! ...And with those higher prices there is simply no real value on high end high cost BD players. Buy one for less than $150 like that Sony BDP-S570, and just buy another one in two years or less from now! That is the way things work nowadays. ...And not just with Blu-ray players...

Having experience with both the Sony BDP-S470 and the Oppo 93, I'd have to say the Oppo is WAY ahead of the Sony. But don't get me wrong, the Sony is a very good unit especially at the price.

So, what makes #1 better than #10? Is it picture quality? Or, bang for the buck?

Yes, it is the overall value, features, picture & sound quality that makes the criterias of what's the best one. ...Popularity and number of sales get into the equation as well. * We all know that the Oppo BDP-93 ($499) is the better player overall for BD Picture, Sound, SACD, DVD-Audio, HDCD, DVD upscaling, build quality... But the Sony BDP-S570 ($129 street) with 3D, DLNA, WI-FI, Netflix, YouTube, and a zillion more Internet streaming provenances, iPod, iPhone remote, 1Gb internal memory for BD Live, plus SACD playback, and a very fast disc loader, plus superb BD picture & Sound is simply the #1 seller because of that very low price! ...Not the best DVD upscaler around, but who cares if you play mainly BDs? ...And at only $129!!! The Sony BDP-S470 you can get now for only $99! And the Sony BDP-S770 you can get for $159! It's replacement, the BDP-S780 is $179 and adds more features like VUDU. ...And the price is still coming down! _____________________________ _____________________________ *** OK, questions for you guys who have the 470, or 570, or 770! 1. => When you play an SACD, the front panel display indicates the time of the track playing; but not the track, only T is indicated! Right? - The front panel display doesn't give you any indication at all about the Artist, Title, Track, SACD layer, SACD light, NOTHING! Second question: 2. => When DSD is set to 'On', and HDMI Audio to 'Auto'; the player send the DSD stream as is. And if your pre/pro or receiver can accept the DSD audio signal; it will say 'DSD', but if you check the Info by clicking 'Info' or 'Display' on your remote, you'll see DSD 5.1 (or 5.0) & fs: 44.1kHz, right? Only if you set the HDMI Audio out to 'PCM' (or DSD to 'Off'); you'll see PCM Multich & fs: 176.4kHz, right?

There is one more very important thing on all of this, and it's RELIABILITY, or Durability! How long your Blu-ray player will last till the BD drive gives up! * I don't know of any player that doesn't have any problem at all. Even the best build BD player that cost $5,000+ has his own set of issues and obsolescence, ...rather sooner than later! ______________________ What is amazing here is that you can get a BD player now for only $30, plus or minus, and it will have a very good picture quality! Or you can buy a CD/SACD player only (four-box system), like the dCS Scarlatti, for only $79,996! ;D Anyway, a player like the Sony BDP-S470 that plays Blu-rays, DVDs, SACDs, CDs, and a zillion more other formats (physical or downstreaming), and cost less than 100 squids, and with great performance to boot, should give the Scarlatti a good run for its money! ;D ******************** MYSTERY! => In the Stereophile April 2011 issue, on page 100, which product is on that advertising page?

The first YouTube video was removed, so I linked another one with five 3D BD players this time.
* But there are many other similar videos on youtube, and the players are also very similar as well.

Mini Mystery!
=> If you Bitstream DSD from a Sony BD player (SACD from the 70 series) out of its HDMI output, and that your pre/pro or receiver can decode (accept as is) that DSD audio stream; what is the frequency sampling rate (fs)?

basiclaly it's features for price point, don't matter what comes stock standard outside the box anymore, with network connectivity new features should be able to be added in future pending what the feature is..
from what i've seen in dvd upscaling it is practically pointless as it depends how good your disc is before the upscale happens, you can have a $99vs$5,000 bd player and have the same effect on replay via hdmi, so if you want to watch dvd's on your lcd/plasmas/led screens the viewing platform for dvd's will likely be s-video or component, as good as hdmi is the biggest let down will be your media you playback... unless you're planning to remaster your whole dvd collection for dvd source material hdmi may not be the best outcome for playback medium regardless of resolution gained..
as for the top 5 I would have to say on price point alone sony, samsung and lg will always show top sales figures..
though looking at the topend of the ladder, you'll have sony es series, oppo 9x series, onkyo and denon with minor footnotes from yamaha and and pioneer.. then you have the 400 disc oddities from sony...
imho upscaling dvd's is always going to look bad especially if try and force 24 fps... to see which player is best for you I would have to say run the bd player straight to monitor and play a few hundred disc's to check upscale quality and see for yourself then mount it through a avr or pre-amp and re-sample again... 1080i/p/24 may look good for some things for others they may look crap.. to the point why bother using a bd player to upscale..
also note you may want to look at dvd players that have hdmi out to compare upscale resolution against a bd player..
whether it be a bd player or a dvd player i never buy cheap, average spend $350-850 for a single disc player for multi disc $600-750 for 5-6 disc models, not sure on 400disc's models though as i never brought 1 so far..
when comparing sony bd models I don't think you will see much difference in quality in upscale between say a 370, 470, 570 or es models in regards to dvd upscale..

There are two type of people in this world. The ones who are traditional with tubes, and the ones who stream with androids.
There is the holy land and there is Hollywood.

I have the Sony S580 sitting atop my Oppo 95. The Sony is a true lightweight but is fast, sounds wonderful and provides a fine image. Clean, clear, excellent colors but cannot compete with the Oppo in sheer beauty of image that has an exceptional film like quality. The oppo just trounces the other players in that respect. Sound quality out of the oppo is also better, but just using the HDMI outs, the differences are negligible. If one is not looking to spend a good deal of the green the Sony is a most excellent player. I do not like the netflix interface as it has no search feature. Neither does the Appletv for that matter. So for Netflix and all the other online stuff I use the Roku XDS, it is the cats meow.

I am bidding right now on a Samsung BD-C6900 3D Blu-ray player. This BD player was originally listed at $400, and then $350 USD. Right now it's mine for $160 Canadian. But I'm trying to get it for $130, or $140 max. Anyone here with that player, or someone with previous experience with that Samsung 2010 3D Blu-ray player model #BD-C6900? - Reviews are mixed; some great ones, and others not at the top. The Panasonic DMP-BDT210 is another 3D Blu-ray player I am contemplating as well. That one I can get for $125 Canadian with an 18-month warranty. Can someone pitch in with experience in either one of these two 3D BD players? * Next after that would be the Oppo BDP-95 3D Universal Blu-ray player, but that one is a thousand bucks! And I'm trying to stay under the $200 mark right now. You know... money doesn't stream down a river near by!

I have the Samsung 6900. Came with the Samsung pn50c8000 as a package deal bought last year.. Don't use it much (Have an Oppo) unless watching 3D. It's very flimsy...but actually performs well. It does a pretty good job upscaling dvd's. All the other bells & whistles are pretty cool, also. Its built in media player is a plus. But my plasma media interface is much better with dvd menu like navigation. So, was quite suprised considering build quility...
If you can get cheap...I dont think you will be disappointed.
