After reading all of the issues people have had with the UMC-1 I never really considered it an option, besides, I was very happy with my Pioneer 1120.
Recently I dove into the home theater front projector world and decided that my new room needed some upgrades. I moved my 1120 to the TV room and ordered a UMC-1 to give it a try. With a 30 day tryout, I really had nothing to lose.
This was my first pre/pro and while the 1120/XPA-5 combo gave me amazing results this UMC-1 blew the doors off of it. I really did not expect the sound improvement that I heard, but wow, I did. For 2 channel music, this thing is a subtle beast. The music is mush more apparent and vocals are alive.
For my 5.1 surround HT it is simply in a new category of "cool". I am also running ERD-1's and I suppose you can call me a Emotiva convert.
I REALLY love the dolby volume as we watch a lot of movies at night and always hated how the levels would spike with other receivers even though I was using "Night" mode. This one is so perfect that the wife has not given me the "eye" once when something in the movie explodes.
My FL/FR are Polk Monitor 70's and they have never sounded so good. Of course I know that these are budget speakers and I am currently trying to decide between Salk and Magnepan which are obviously 2 different types of speakers. My sub is a HSU VTF-2 MK3.
Now, some people are pointing me to the 6.3 and/or 8.3's so my decisions are getting more difficult.
All in all - Emotiva makes a great product for people who want great sound without breaking the bank or get hung up on brand names. I suppose I could have bought a $2k pro/pro, but would it have been any better? I don't think so....at least not for me.
Next on my list, 2 UPA-1's!
