I have been using UMC-1 + XPA-5 for 2 days and here are my initial thoughts:
1) It came with the latest firmware (FW) installed which is 07.04 which was nice since I didn't have to do it myself.
2) EmoQ was very easy to use and configure the speakers and I actually kept the EQ settings it suggested with some modifications. The speaker level adjustment seemed to be pretty accurate.
3) Came with annoying ticking noise when I'm changing volume.
4) Experience 1 video drop out while watching PS3 bluray disc. I called the Tech and he told me to try turning off "deep color" and it hasn't happened ever since. Will keep you posted if this happens again. I have 52 inch Samsung LCD tv which is 7 series.
5) When I'm playing CD (2 channel) using my SACD player connected through ext. 7.1 RCA cables, I can not change the sound field (Modes) since it gets locked into "Direct" mode. So I connected the SACD player to UMC-1 using an additional optical cable. This enabled me to switch the sound fields although I have to go into Input settings and manually change Audio input from ext. 7.1 to optical 1 everytime I switch from playing SACD to CD, which can be annoying.
The overall sound has more details than my previous Onkyo receiver. I heard that the sound improves over time with increased usage time for the amplifier.
Does anyone know what "Dolby V Modeler" mode is?
The tech support over the phone has been helpful and my new experience with Emotiva gears has been so far positive.

Folks have reported that a factory reset or re-flash (boo) will fix the ticking volume.
Can you not have your CDs played via optical? You could also set up an additional input for the same device, one on ext. and the other on optical, that will be easier to switch between.
The modeller for DV is how it applies its EQ curves, "modeller only" means it only does a modelling adjustment and does not try to normalise the overall level.
Enjoy!

Mine has an annoying ticking sound too but cannot reflash because the USB driver doesn't work on my computer and a reset did not help. Also an element in the display doesn't light up. Of course they want me to be without my unit for weeks in order to repair it and flash the new firmware. At this point I'm very discouraged with this unit, it's construction quality and software compatibility are very poor.
