Blu-ray is making new friends at a healthy pace, according to figures from the NPD Group, while DVD is dead in the water. Fifteen percent of U.S. households used a Blu-ray player in a six-month period spanning 2010-11, a big improvement from nine percent in 2009-10, while the percentage using DVD remained unchanged at 57 percent. So while Blu-ray remains behind DVD, it is catching up.
Discs in general continue to slide. Those who still buy them regularly number 116 million, down from 128 million in 2009. But Blu-ray buyers are buying more discs than they did in 2009-10.
Blu-ray's picture and sound quality are attracting people. Eight of 10 people who have invested in the format, or plan to, cite superior quality and technology.
PS3 remains a big factor in the Blu-ray base. Forty-nine percent of PS3 owners use their game consoles to watch a BD once a month.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Blu-ray's appeal goes beyond discs to embrace streaming. Fully half of those who plan to buy a BD player intend to use video subscription services.
To us, that indicates a fair amount of savvy: It appears consumers are choosing Blu-ray for quality, streaming for selection, and enjoying the best of both worlds. We always knew you had it in you, fellow Blu-ray enthusiasts!

The question will be; of those who buy/own BDPs, how many have equipment to use it to its full potential?
In post in this forum we've talked about gadgets and features as well as BDs falling price. With the fall of Block Buster allowing Red Box to gain market share people are seeing that you don't have to spend $5.50 for 2 nights rental of a BD title. I think BD is coming around because: 1) player prices have fallen under $100 for generic Wal-Mart grade equipment, 2) BDPs offer more features than a standard DVD player (streaming/Internet access), 3) Price of renting and/or buying a BD title has come down and 4) TVs have, in general, got larger and less expensive.

How much of the bluray sales are do over of old favorites. I've gotten a few recently: Where Eagles Dare, The Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heroes, For A Few Dollars More, Iron Monkey and a couple more Diana Krall. Love them all. Now waiting for the release of another old favorite, The Lion King!

I'm right between Victoria and Nanaimo, so no problem here. David, I live on Vancouver Island; check your map. - I used to go on the mainland often in the past, but not anymore now. * By the way, "Lawrence of Arabia" ain't available on Blu yet!

Ah, I am familiar with the area, Bob. I've spent a lot of time in Nanaimo, and also up in Courtenay. Beautiful country. But the disk stores on the island are likely not as complete as those in the City, so sorry about that. I was certain I'd seen Lawrence on Blu, but my wife informs me it was DVR'd in HD off of cable. My apologies. But it was still stunningly beautiful in HD, at least.

To us, that indicates a fair amount of savvy: It appears consumers are choosing Blu-ray for quality, streaming for selection, and enjoying the best of both worlds. We always knew you had it in you, fellow Blu-ray enthusiasts! If it is throwaway entertainment, I will stream it. If there is a chance that I might want to keep it or enjoy it in detail, I get the Blu-ray. If it is still only on DVD, I stream it, with a few exceptions on TV series that are unlikely to be transfered to Blu-ray quality. I also do not subscribe to cable or satellite. I use Google News for current events. As you can probably guess from this, I am not sports fan. I have eliminated the the need to endure commercials. It would be nice if I could get live video programming streamed over the Internet on demand. I would not mind paying a little extra to nix the commercials. I am not a frequent TV watcher, so it is quality over quantity for me.

From where I live I can order any BD title I want from my local stores. {Don't need to go in Vancouver, or Montreal, or Los Angeles, or New York for that.} * I will get "Once Upon a Time in the West" on Blu-ray eventually soon enough!

until the running dvd's in post at 24fps I doubt upconvertion is going to improve the dvd quality that much better you know..
last I checked 1 of may brd's it was a min of 50mb, so any streaming claiming 1080i/1080p is going to be talking BS as they claim to be streaming you a min of 320x240 resolution due to your bandwidth restriction ....... you be lagging if you be using a 3 mb stream to be watching a 1080p content..
since I watch alot of tv series, I would say, blue ray has been more a storage medium than 1080 resolution whether the film stock is 4:3, 16:9, 1.78:1-2.85:1

Tell you what I miss now that I have a sizable collection on Blu. . .a Changer.
I have the sony 400 disc dvd changer and love that at the end of the day, my DVD's are in as good of shape as they were when I put them in. That, to me is a drawback on Blu, too much handling of the disc. Not a big issue for me, but when you have a wife, kid, family/visitors who want to watch a blu, you cant always be sure they will treat them as well. And the price of entry for a BD changer is still a bit too high for me and I'm not sure if the VQ is as good as my oppo.

i'd liked to own 15 brd mega changers same with dvd..
i'm slowly buying up brd's as much as I can afford at 1 time.
mega is better to keep the family and kids in check, the oppo is great for personal use
