I am not doubting at all that this is a fantastic sounding piece of equipment, but I am a techie through and through, thus my need to know. No matter the answer to my question, I am very likely still ordering one. 
Too many good things about it, and too many people are far too happy with it.
As this is an analog output device, either of these COULD apply, so I am asking: is the attenuation stage for this a digitally controlled analog chip/device and applied AFTER D/A conversion, or is the attenuation a bit-reduction scheme, applied to the digital side of things, even before the D/A? (The latter of these options I am not a HUGE fan of...)

Finding this forum has made me put all of my PC speaker system designing on the back burner - for now.
