Well, that explains a lot then! I also created and taught a class at San Jose State called "Subcultural Expression Through Music: Punk, Reggae and Metal." It was always full.

I used to listen to a lot of killing joke, suicidal tendencies, and the original beastie boys(not the rap, but the early punk stuff). DK, black flag, cramps... but you wouldn't really consider that Heavy Metal.

Man my parents hated them. ;D , but that was a looooooooooooooooong time ago.

I once heard Mike Muir perform "Institutionalized" very slowly and solo acoustic. It was awesome, and almost Sublime-like

It was in the heart of summer and must have been 90 degrees. If my memory serves, it was around 1993 or so. Hahaha, man that was a wild time. Anyone ever get into Mike Muir's side project, Infectious Grooves?

Ahh!! A very nice epic thread.
1. Nu, Groove, Thrash, Power, Progressive, Industrial… Just not the real extreme stuff.
2.Hot damn! Too many to list. A lot of the bands mentioned in this thread along with Blind Guardian and Van Canto.
3. Everything but terrible production. E.g. Metallica's St. Anger.
4. Formulaic Metal and the constant competition amongst metal fans.
That and the Blabbermouth kids and their stupid posts. I'll go to Blabbermouth for news but as soon as the article is done I won't read the posts.
PS. I would have love to have taken DYohn's class that he mentioned above. It would probably be the only one I'd stay away for.

I had Jello Biafra come speak to my class once. He encouraged the students to quit wasting their time sitting in classrooms listening to old men spout drivel they learned from books and to go out into the world and DO something. He also said that the most misunderstood part of the punk scene was that "stupid young boys" thought it was OK to get angry and violent towards one another and to get into fights and to beat each other up in the pit. He said that was not only wrong it was stupid and indicated the death of the punk scene: when the morons take it over.

This is just too good to not share.
Death Metal Friday by Totality
I would have liked to have had a guitar solo in there but alas they couldn't squeeze it in.

I know I've posted this before, and its probably more fusion/rock than metal but this guy is just so good I wanted you all to see him. As a player/teacher myself for my whole life (and a pretty decent one IMHO :-)), I'm amazed at the speed and style this guy has.
He is a guitar players guitar player....
Guthrie Govan
Hang in there until about 1:45..
