I just purchased Magneplanar MG 1.7s on Saturday. I will receive them in about 5-7 weeks. They will replace my MG 12s. The 12s are still in great shape sonically and physically but the upgrade bug bit me hard after listening to the 1.7s. I will have to decide whether to move the 12s into another system or sell them

Should have spent the $2000 on Magnestands for the MG12s instead. Just my very honest and somewhat biased opinion, although based on personal observation. The Magnestand MG12s I heard side by side $17,000 Vandersteen 5As were every bit as good, except in the lowest octave. www.indiespinzone.com/magnestand.html

I certainly appreciate other's opinions and gave that thought after visiting his site, however I had talked to my wife about that route and she put it this way - if you think I'm letting you spend 2 grand without even being to listen to the speaker first you are sadly mistaken. We both were impressed with the 1.7s and decided to pull the trigger

I forgot to ask, how did the owner of the vandersteens react when the 12s were just as good?

I used to own the MG12's for years and as good as they were, the 1.7's are several notches better. Magnepan has hit the ball out of the county with the 1.7 One thing to keep in mind is that the 1.7's take a very long time to break in. Mine took about 200 hours to break in fully. Also, they love power, the more the better.

I am still waiting for mine to arrive and don't expect them for at least a month. The dealer I purchased them from will deliver them and set them up, a nice service. My amps are upa-1s so hopefully I won't feel there is not enough power

You should be fine with the UPA-1's. I was running an XPA-5 with the 1.7's until recently when I switched to an XPA-2. It's still been evaluated, but all indications are that it has more slam and endless reserve than the XPA-5.

I am still running my 1.6's with UPA-2 and honestly don't FEEL like I need more power, but know I prob do. Point being you should be fine with the UPA-1's until you FEEL like you need more power. Heck, I went to a hifi shop in dallas where they were running 3.7's with a 30wpc tube amp very loud and clear.

I have 1.7's and XPA-1 amps on dedicated 20 amp lines. The lights on the amps barely move. Maggie's don't need as much power as I thought.

I believe the theory is that you need the power to "control" the panels, or I guess to bring out the detail. But hearing them without all that power is still a great pleasure. Danno, have you ever heard them on any lower powered amp? If so how would you compare it with the XPA-1's, I have been contemplating that as my jump up so that I never have to question power again

I have also tried a EL34 single ended tube amp that puts out all of 9 watts. Very lush and romantic sounding on jazz with great sound stage. The sound level was OK for light jazz. On rock or big classics the bass gets bloated and falls apart. With the the XPA-1 you give up a bit of sound stage for a LOT more slam and control. The 1.7/XPA-1 combo will play so loud that you will hurt your hearing. Insane levels no distortion.

As harri009 mentions above, it's the control of the panel that is key with high current high power amps with the Maggies. To me, the most audible difference between the XPA-5 and XPA-2 driving the 1.7's is the control of bass the XPA-2 has over the 5. Everything is just more tight and better defined.

I must admit I do not listen to any hard rock or orchestra. I mostly play jazz, piano, vocalist, and soft rock type music. So all the things that don't require huge amounts of power.

congrats on the 1.7s, enjoy em,,
know I love my 1.6QRs with Peter Gunn XOs and wiring,, as many say, you either love em or hate em,,
Derry
forgot to mention the maggies are fed their ponies from the XPA-2,, listen to most everything, music - movies at the 78 to 82 DB level,, when the movies offer those slam bang items does several of the amps lights go on, normally just one on each side and occasionally two,,

Miracles never cease, my dealer said we got lucky and the speakers showed up already - way ahead of schedule. They are coming tomorrow to set them up.

I ended up going to pick them up and have been enjoying them, can't wait for them to break in. The dealer is coming Sunday to tweak them so I'm excited to see if they can get them to sound better.
