So my new UPA-2 showed up yesterday Got it brand new at Emofest for $229. I know my Bel has a problem in its left channel. It's very noisy and having 103db speakers does not help. When i hooked up my UPA-2 this morning i noticed right away that the noise was a lot louder but it has a gain knob. I played with it and found if i have it set at the second to first dot, the noise is gone. There is 11 dots on the gain knob. Does this hurt anything having the gain so low? It sounds great but i just wanted to know. I know my head room is gone. Is my dynamic range hurt by this Any help would be lovely!

Does it hurt anything? No, but it means the output is limited. If you have the gain controls set equally on both sides, and you can attain a volume level you want, then it is fine. If I was tyou though, I'd get that Bel Canto fixed (and what, you're using it as a preamp now? Then the noise you hear is on the preamp side, not the amplifier side. Should be an easier, cheaper fix than it would have been if it was the output. If you don't adress it, then it will likely only get worse as the component causing the noise fails.)

Yes i am using it as a preamp now. There is a authorized dealer close by but i need another preamp in the mean time. Or no music lol.
