just wondering if its ok to put a receiver on top of an XPA-5 if its the only option you have. it would be in a entertainment center but the back panel is removed.

I guess it depends what speakers you are driving and your usual listening levels, but you should be fine.

I'd make sure you had an inch of space for ventilation.....

There is a couple inches of space above the reciever.
My speakers are Aperion 6T's, 5C, and two 4bp's.

In addition to what is said above, you should have a space of a few inches (2"-3") between the components, and leave the doors of rack (if it has any) slightly ajar. If you are using the receiver as a pre/pro, the power amp side is still dumping heat (a few modern receivers can disable the power section). Remember, heat will severely shorten the life of electronic components.

I would not be able to have space between the amp and reciever. The reciever would be directly on top of the amp. There is a couple inches of space above the reciever and the amp sticks out the back further than the reciever. I cannot have the doors open because of a toddler. I have a kid lock on it actually.

Then, play it at moderate levels and check often for heat build up. There are also exhaust fans that you can use that will actually draw heat out of the rack. Good luck!

Thanks guys, yeah exhaust fans are not an option since there is not back on that section of the E cener. Watched some Thor for a bit. seems to be fine. I never had the xpa-5 get hot anyway.

I have less than an inch above my UPA-5 and XPA-3 and they get barely warm to the touch. My rack is open at both the back and the front though. Your going to need to teach the child not to touch when the door's are open.

Open the doors.. but toddlers love to touch things with glowing blue lights! Good thing that the Emo amps don't get hot. Wait until the toddler figures out the remote!

Brian, call Victoria, she'll take care of the kid touching the equipment. Suggest you have a bag full of treats before she arrives.

All jokes aside, remember that toddlers fingers are always moist. Electricity is not one of those things that children should learn about by touch. The consequencies can be too disastrous. So, keep the doors closed and child proof. You can always replace damaged components!

Shock collars work very well. LOL, I wouldn't do that to my dog. If I recall correctly, my electronics were out of her reach, the cabinets below the equipment had child proofing, but my speakers were exposed. I don't think she ever damaged a speaker by touching it though. She is a brilliant person so caught on to what she could and couldn't do very quickly.

easiest way to fix any heat issues is to stick a couple of fans in there. Im not sure what your setup looks like but mine hides in a cabinet with seeded glass doors. i picked up two 9 inch fans from Fry's for $14 each, cut their connectors, found an old 12V plug and cut its wire, wired them all together and stuck one fan on my XPA-3 and the other on the UPA-1, they stay pretty darn cool even after running for 10+ hours.
let me know if you want any pictures.

My UMC-1 gets much warmer than the Xpa-5. It is the one that needs cooling. BTW it is sitting on the Xpa-5, open on all sides 10cm on top. Even when pushed the Xpa-5 never gets hot.
