I agree exactly. as you as you said " weight alone is not a reliable factor in determining the quality of a speaker/sub" but it is a factor. Thats all Im saying. Glad we finally agree. SOmeone with a xref12 if there are any owners out there wanna open it up to see how its built and braced?

SOmeone with a xref12 if there are any owners out there wanna open it up to see how its built and braced? No we don't agree! Your contention has always been that if sub (A) is heavier than sub (B), then sub A must be a better sub than B. That is totally false. . My contention is that you have to investigate what comprises the difference in weight, and take a look at the electronics and components inside. I have also offered a number of things that could cause weight differences but add nothing to quality or performance, that you chose not to rebut. Instead, you resort to the sort of 'fanboy accusation' because of the constitution of my equipment sig. Now Really?

TRY TO UNDERSTAND THIS...IF YOU CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was stating that with 2 similars 12" subs that are close in size and everything else. But one weighs 25 lbs more than most likely it is built better. If its not built better than it has a hell of a heavier magnet. The damn air inside of it does not weigh 25lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! understand? I never said it was a better sub. IN FACT!!!! if you read one of the last few posts I even stated it may not be a better sub. Ill go back and make sure im not the one losing my mind.

POST 46 I stated this does not make it a better sub from the weight. did I not?
All Im saying is there is obviously a reason there is 25 more lbs in 2 similiar subs. I could care less which on is better. I would not buy either of the 2 I used for comp.
You still cant answer it why 2 similiar size and everything subs one has 25 more lbs in it. I guess it can only be 2 things. better built or heavier magnet and/or amp. or as you say overbuilt. I am now going to bow out of this as its getting on my nerves.

selkec, all weight means is that one's heavier than the other. It has nothing (nothing) to do with how it performs.

Having had both port and sealed over the last 30 years I much prefer the sealed enclosure. I'll give you my 2 cents worth. The ported versions give you deep powerful low end but it find that it is less defined and woof-i-er. The low frequency's seem to get lost and turn to mush. A passive radiator is similar with just less mush. A sealed cabinet gives you much more control over the "throw" of the woofer and also tightens up the movement and allows for much better definition in the real low range. And now to say how much easier they are to listen to. All sound good if tuned right but I spent more time tuning a ported cab than the 2 sealed cabs I have now. Save yourself a lot of money and buy one or a couple of emo sub's if in an apartment. Why spend the money if you don't have to. Just a thought.

I have always purchased components (power amps, speakers, subs) that do not need to be pushed hard in order to achieve satisfying results. If you find that you need to extract the last uumph from your sub "to get there" you need a better sub. Ported or sealed is irrelevant. Therefore, I have developed my own little formula for subs: It should be able to output 106dB at 20Hz at the listening position (12ft away) and it must have -3dB point below 20Hz. I'm eagerly waiting for the published specs for the X/REF-15. BTW, not wanting to start an argument, I don't believe in subs for movie and subs for music. A good speaker/sub will reliably reproduce the signal fed to it.

Is 106 db at 20 hz from 12 feet away easy to do? Hmmm. now im curious ig my sub can even do that. I doubt it. Im bored Ill break out my test tones and meter and find out.
Nope sure cant. I guess my sub is not as good as thought. It does hit 104. Not sure if thats good or not at 20 hz.
SO far @ 14ft its where my listening postion is and the most bass 20hz- 104db 30hz- 102db 35hz- 107db 40hz- 114db 45hz- 121hz 50hz- 121hz 70hz- 114hz sweep from 5-100hz max was 124
I thought it was maxing over 126 but I must been wrong. Oh well 124 is not bad for 1 sub

That is close. It is very achievable. I listened to 106db @20hz at 2m and it was impressive. I really don't need more bass than that to be totally satisfied with my subs. My current resident subs can't do it. So, I definitely need to upgrade, but I'm giving Emo 1st try. ;D

The back of my seat is exactly 12ft from the subs. The Emo U-12s cannot do 20Hz. They are about -5dB down at 20hz. They do have very useful energy 30Hz - 120Hz, but they do not meet my criteria. I really did not measure them, I just listened. They performed similar to my Velodyne SPL-12, so they would likely produce about 95dB at 20Hz @ 2m (6.5ft).

Ill betcha if and when the xref15 comes out and you get 2 loike your sig says you will acheive what you want and then some. By the way is the xref the same as the subs they talked about that were supposed to have a seperate amp with 2 seperate subs? Or are those nto being made now?

No the X-Ref 15 is not the same as the ERS subs with the separate amp. It's just a 15in version of the current X-Ref subs.

Outboard amping will be assigned to the ERS (Emo Reference Series), the best they will produce. If the X/REF-15s don't do it for me, I will be looking at Rythmik 15" sealed servos.
